Fathers Day Is Coming, Are You Celebrating?
I included this little piece of history, so that we know how important this holiday really is. So this year, don’t forget to honor your father, or a father for that matter, to show how much we appreciate there continued devotion, support, and love for their children. Fathers play just as important of a role as mothers do in the world of parenting, and it is important to note in your Fathers Day cards, the specific things that your father has done to help you become the best person you could be. It is sometimes particularly hard for sons to show their appreciation for their fathers, but don’t let another year pass without doing so… after all, Fathers Day is the perfect excuse for bringing your relationship even closer, and strengthening your bond with dad. Fathers Day was a holiday created by Sonora Dodd, in honor of her father, William Smart (cool name, huh?). It is said that Sonora’s mother passed while giving birth to the sixth child, which left her father alone with six children to raise, on a farm in Washington State. She wanted to honor her father who showed nothing but complete selflessness and devotion to his children. So in honor of her father (who was born in June), she chose to hold the first Fathers Day celebration in 1910. Then in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Fathers Day and declared the 3rd Sunday of June, “Fathers Day.” It wasn’t till later (1972), when President Nixon made this holiday permanent.
