LONG ISLAND EXCHANGE "ADVICE"

FEAR: Tips on conquering yours

All of us are afraid of something. Sometimes what we are afraid of prevents us from reaching certain levels of functionality in our lives, or dreams we want to achieve. But fear is nothing more than a developed reaction. We learn to fear… we are not born with it. So how can we defy these learned responses and persevere past our fears? I am so glad you asked…

  • Know that fear is just a feeling, and tell yourself that it cannot actually harm you.
  • Accept the feelings that fear gives you as part of the process (anxiety, nervousness, and uncomfortably)… you will be better prepared to deal with your fears if you accept the emotional discomfort that comes with it. The sooner you accept it and work through it, the sooner it will pass, and you will be rid of it.
  • When your fear presents itself, recognize that the fear is present, and use a positive affirmation to get past it. My favorite is, “The power of my will and faith will guide me through this, as it always has in the past!”
  • Fear prevents you from seeing what is in front of you. Sometimes the present circumstances prevent you from seeing ahead, which can invoke your fear as well.
  • When you are afraid because you can’t see what’s to come, you must acknowledge that you will step forward blindly. Trust in yourself when you step forward blindly, after all, everyday is a day full of things you didn’t know would happen.
  • When you get through your fear, acknowledge your achievement and courage by rewarding yourself. Recognizing your conquering of your fear will solidify your triumph, and the end of that fear.
  • Don’t be afraid to seek out support in conquering your fears.

Fear is a learned condition, and it can be unlearned. Facing your fears gets you accustomed to challenge, helps to build your courage, and desensitizes you from other fears. May you all live without fear, full of courage, and free of boundaries!
