ARBOR VIEW HOUSE BED AND BREAKFAST

Arbor View House Bed and Breakfast

In Long Island’s North Fork wine country there is a splendid little getaway called the Arbor View House. This bed and breakfast offers an excellent contradiction—the B&B is outfitted with the latest in high-speed internet, wireless connectivity and fax machines for all your business needs; but Arbor View advertises itself as a place to get away from it all and do literally nothing. You can relax with an Arbor View shiatsu massage or an aromatherapy bath; there’s a library of books board games to explore when you aren’t taking a tour of one of North Fork’s great wineries. Who could resist such a combination of business and pleasure?

Arbor View was originally built in 1820 in what’s known as the Federal style. A few years later it was renovated in a Victorian style; today Arbor View is listed by the Society of the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities. It is in the long process of being lovingly restored in modern times by the owners, Veda and Wilfred Joseph, who treat it as an ongoing project.

The bed and breakfast offers quite a range of amenities, including massage, aromatherapy baths and yoga classes. The rooms themselves are quaint-looking and comfortable, starting with the Zinfandel room, with its queen-sized bed and a great garden view. The Rose room has a garden/grape arbor view and cast-iron tub. There’s also a Merlot room with its queen bed, high ceilings and cast iron tub, but the real treat of Arbor View is the Champagne Suite. This large room with its king-size bed and whirlpool tub even features a private deck (available on request). The room rates include a four-course candlelight breakfast for two, sure to be a memorable experience for couples on a weekend getaway. Arbor House welcomes children, but call ahead as some weekends aren’t kid-friendly. The B&B has a no smoking and no pets policy, so it’s good to plan accordingly.

Arbor View’s North Fork location puts it in the same geographic area as more than twenty five wineries, the Orient State Park and Wildlife Preserve, Orient State Park Beach and a good selection of local restaurants, bars and cafes.

There are nine golf courses within a half-hour of the B&B, including Island’s End Golf and Country Club, which is only one mile away. Other golf attractions include Calverton Links and Cedars Golf Club. There are also several historic villages in the area including the Village of East Marion, the Village of Orient and the Village of Southold. Shutterbugs should look into the Horton Point Lighthouse and Museum and the East End Lighthouses, which offer an endless series of great photo opportunities. Photo buffs should not miss these great scenic landscapes!

With prices starting in the mid two hundreds in peak season, Arbor View is a great anniversary getaway, or just a place to disappear for a few days to get away from it all. Arbor View is located at 8900 Main Road in East Marion; you can contact them at (631) 477-8440 or toll free at (800) 963-8777. You can also visit them on the internet at www.arborviewhouse.com.
