CUT YOUR OWN CHRISTMAS TREES

“Cut-Your-Own” Christmas Trees on Long Island

For many people, picking and cutting a holiday tree is a time-honored family tradition. Some are happy buying an artificial tree, complete with already-attached lights or decorations, but others want to continue that old family tradition and bring home the real thing.

Long Island has a good variety of cut-your-own tree vendors. Suffolk County’s tree sellers offer a wide range of options-some of which include early bird “pre-tagging” and pre-cutting service for those who don’t have the inclination to do their own sawing.

One farm stands out for its claims to be the very first “pick-your-own” operation on Long Island. Lewin Farms offers strawberries, peaches, tomatoes, and, of course, Christmas trees. They offer four-foot tall trees as well as twelve footers, and also have "balled trees" available that can be planted after the holiday season ends. Cutting time at Lewin Farms begins on the first weekend after Thanksgiving. They are located at 830 Sound Avenue, Wading River, NY. It’s always best to phone ahead in case of bad weather or early “sold-out” situations. Lewin Farms is open daily from 9AM to 5PM and can be reached at 631-929-4327.

Tilden Lane Farm, located at 48 Wyckoff Street in Greenlawn, features precut trees, tree wrapping, and best of all, the saws are provided. The trees on offer at Tilden Lane Farm include Blue Spruce, White Spruce, and Douglas Fir just to name a few. This farm is only open on weekends from 9AM to 3PM. Contact them at 631-261-6392.

Baiting Hollow Nursery also offers pre-cut and wrapped trees. Located at Fresh Pond Ave. & Sound Avenue in Calverton, this tree seller features wagon rides and refreshments to spice up your holiday fun. Shaking and mechanical cleaning is also provided and Baiting Hollow offers the use of their saws if you want to cut your own. The tree selection here includes White Spruce, White Pine and Douglas Fir. The nursery is open every day until December 25th from 9AM to 4PM. Call 631-929-4327 for additional information.

These are just a few of the Long Island tree sellers to choose from. When you get ready to make the trip to pick and cut your own Christmas tree, it’s important to call ahead to check the availability of “u-cut” trees. Depending on the weather, pre-cut trees may be the only ones on offer, and depending on the lateness of the season and the type of tree you desire, some stocks may be sold out.

It’s a good idea to dress for an extended outdoor trip when choosing your tree—you may spend a good bit of time wandering among the selections before you find a tree that looks good to you. You’ll also have to wait for the tree to be shaken and cleaned if the farm offers those services. Don’t forget some rope or bungee cords to tie your tree down with—the long journey home will require a good secure tie-down! If you call ahead, dress warmly and come prepared with gloves and some rope, your tree search is sure to be a fun and memorable experience.
