Take a Self-Guided Lighthouse Tour on Long Island

Long Island is known for many things; however, one of the many attractions which Long Island is best known for is the numerous amounts of lighthouses which are scattered throughout the shores of Long Island. If one is interested in lighthouses, there is perhaps no better place to view such magnificent structures as Long Island. The following paragraphs will highlight a few of the many lighthouses present on Long Island which may be worth a self-guided tour.

Lighthouses in the Hamptons/Montauk Area

Cedar Island Lighthouse, located in East Hampton, is a wonderful place to do a little lighthouse sightseeing. This lighthouse is part of Cedar Point County Park and is in the process of being preserved. If staying in the Hamptons area, a trip to Cedar Island Lighthouse may be a nice thing to do.

If one is in the Montauk area, a trip to the Montauk Point Lighthouse will yield the pleasure of seeing the oldest lighthouse in New York. This lighthouse, which is currently in operation, was built in 1796 and the building of such was under the express authorization of the father of our nation, George Washington. The historical value that the Montauk Point Lighthouse provides is well worth the trip.

North Fork Area

Located in Southold, New York is the Horton Point Lighthouse. Individuals wishing to view the lighthouse up close can do so during the weekends in the summertime. This North Fork lighthouse is a beautiful structure to see up close and will cause lighthouse buffs to marvel at its construction.

South Shore Area

Another well-known lighthouse on Long Island is the Fire Island Lighthouse. Set amidst the Fire Island National Seashore, the Fire Island Lighthouse is sure to peak the interest of all visitors who come upon it.

For those who love to view lighthouses, the Long Island area is the place to go. Whatever region one may be visiting or living on Long Island, there is sure to be a lighthouse within driving distance which will please all who visit these marvelously crafted structures.
