DON'T LET YOUR CALENDAR FOOL YOU...

Don’t Let Your Calendar Fool You; Summer’s Not Over Yet!

Or at least the summertime fun isn’t. Labor Day might have “officially” ended the season, but there are still plenty of things to do in September that will give you that hot-fun-in-the-summertime feeling.

  • For the Beach Bums

Don’t put away those swimsuits yet…with temperatures still up in the 80’s you can stretch out your summer tan well into September. Sunken Meadow Park, Jones Beach, and Robert Moses are all open until September 21.

  • For the Kids (or Kid-in-You)

If you didn’t get your fill of fried dough, carnival games or rides this summer, don’t despair…you still have a few more fairs and festival to hit:

Grande Festa Italiana:
September 5-7.
Rides, games, and casino all weekend with fireworks finishing it off on Sunday.

Hempstead Harbor Beach Park
West Shore Drive
Port Washington
(516-883-3826 for more info)

Nesconset Day Craft & Street Fair
September 7th- 10 am-5 pm.
Over 200 vendors, pony rides, petting zoo, food and music.

Nesconset Plaza
Smithtown Boulevard
Nesconset
(631-265-6131 for more info)

Port Jefferson American Music Festival
September 12-14
Concerts, rides, children’s entertainment, arts and crafts throughout the Village of Port Jefferson.

  • For the Dog Lovers

Let your dog run free in the sun at Smithtown’s Blydenburgh Park. A 2 acre fenced-in area in the activity field, this dog park also boasts separate areas for large and small dogs, benches and water fountains.

  • For the Outdoor Movie-Goers

On September 12, Deepwells Farms has its last “movie on the lawn” of 2008. “Enchanted” (Patrick Dempsey, Amy Adams, James Marsden) starts at 6:30; bring your own chair, kick off your flip-flops, and enjoy!

  • For the “Dining-Al-Fresco” Types

Whether seafood, pizza, cheesecake, or all of the above are your favorites, as long as September continues to be summer-like, you can enjoy the warm air while you dine.

Try the stuffed clams, soup in a bread bowl, or for the non-fish-eater, a burger and veggies at The Steamroom in Port Jefferson. The outside deck is great for an afternoon or evening meal!

Pizza, clams on the half shell, burgers…all great. (Sorry, view of busy 25A…not so much.) Nonetheless, Nick’s is still a fun, outdoor eatery!

Cheesecake Factory’s motto is “Something for everyone”. I’ll say. With a gazillion choices in their menu- brunch, lunch, dinner, dessert, coffees, cocktails, it’s a wonder they can make all of these different dishes just right, but, somehow they do. Eat it all outside on the patio in the “Lifestyle Wing” of the Smith Haven Mall and (if September is humid enough) you’ll feel like you’re vacationing in Florida. (P.S.—when the autumn chill starts, the restaurant’s patio heaters will keep you warm!)
