VALENTINE'S DAY ON LONG ISLAND

A Month of Valentine’s Day on Long Island

(Long Island, N.Y.) February...the month of love. Whether your intentions to celebrate Valentine’s Day are romantic or family-oriented, there is plenty to do and see around Long Island. Here are a few ideas:

To begin the month, on Saturday February 6th, bring the kids on over to the Walt Whitman Birthplace and State Historic Site in West Hills for their “Victorian Valentine Workshop”. With the assistance of published poet and art instructor Anne Kingsbury, children aged 7 and up will enjoy writing poetry as well as making an adorable purse to bring home. Walt Whitman Organization Representative Carolyn Diglio informed me that reservations are required, as space is limited. Price is $9.75 per child and program begins at 1 pm. For more information or to register, email educator@waltwhitman.org or call (631) 427-5240 x113.

On February 6, Barnes & Noble in Bay Shore will be featuring Valentine story The Legend of Lyla the Lovesick Ladybug during their 11 am Storytime Program. See website www.barnesandnoble.com or call store directly at (631) 206-0198 for more information.

Also for the kiddies, on February 12th, Pump it Up of Great Neck is hosting “Hoppy Valentine’s Day”. Here, according to Pump it Up public relations representative Jill Phillips, children will jump into incredibly huge arenas filled with gigantically fun inflatables, will enjoy a special Valentine treat and beverage, followed by a Valentine’s Day arts and craft project. Cost is $24.95 per child.

In addition to the February 12th event, Pump it Up will be holding a special drop-off program on the 14th where parents can leave their child from 10:45 till 1:45 for three hours of play, lunch, and a Valentine’s craft project. Cost is $34.95 per child.

Both programs are designed for children aged 3 to 12. Contact Pump it Up at (516) 466-PUMP (4687) or visit their website www.pumpitupparty.com

On February 13, the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society is having a special “Lighthouses are for Lovers” climb from 4 till 6 pm, for $30 per couple. Refreshments, a flower and chocolate will be provided for those with reservations, which are suggested. Email at programs@fireislandlighthouse.com or call (631) 661-4876 for further information.

When the 14th does arrive, romance is the name of the game. For the wine lovers, Long Island Wine Country Tours www.longislandwinecountry.com is hosting the “Valentine’s Day Wine Lovers VIP Tour”. Three wine estates will be visited via round-trip transportation in a luxury coach, available at locations in Nassau and Suffolk, complete with bon voyage champagne and chocolates. An expert tour guide, restaurant lunch and, of course, wine tastings are included for $149 per person. Add on the “Wine Blending Class” and the cost is $194 per guest. Call 866-Wine Country or reserve your spot directly online at their website.

Speaking of wineries…Waters Crest Winery www.waterscrest.com is hosting their “Valentine’s Day Dessert & Wine Event” from 12 till 2 pm on the 14th. Along with Waters Crest wine, renowned pastry chef Michelle Gillette will provide four dessert treats for $15 per person.
