LONG ISLAND BEER

Long Island Beer

Long Island beer lovers have long known about the breweries located on LI. Long Island has a colorful history of brewing beers and renowned beer guides list LI breweries as attractions not to be missed. The expert opinions of these beer guides should not be taken lightly—LI has much to offer for those who believe in Ben Franklin’s old adage about beer being proof that God loves humanity and wants us to be happy.

One location that would make Franklin smile? LI’s South Shore. It’s the home of the one-hundred-fifty years-old Brickhouse Brewery and Restaurant. The house brews include the Brick House Red, the Streetlight Ale, and many others to choose from. The Brickhouse Brewery, located on the corner of Havens Avenue and Main Street in Patchogue, is billed as the oldest commercial building in Patchogue. The history of this building goes far beyond the beer and into the very fabric of America. In the days of the Civil War the building was a hideaway for escaped slaves, who were concealed in the basement. Beer loves have a double reason to check out the Brickhouse—a fascinating part of American history and great brews!

LI’s Blue Point Brewing Company is another Patchogue microbrewery. Blue Point, located at 161 River Avenue, was formed in 1998 by Mark Burford and Peter Cotter, two friends who were following their brew making dreams. The microbrewery is billed as the only one on Long Island, and when the Blue Point opened for business, it had a unique feature. The brewery was created using an interesting assortment of beer making equipment obtained from breweries from all over the United States. Blue Point Brewing Company features a tasting room advertised on the web site, plus Blue Point merchandise.

The Southampton Publick House is another special Long Island beer attraction. From the Montauk Light to the Southampton Secret Ale, this pub is a must-see. Located at 40 Bowden Square in Southampton, the Publick House holds many prestigious local titles including Best Sports Bar in the Hamptons for 2004, Best Happy Hour Bar in the Hamptons 2004 and many other accolades. The pub was established in 1996 and has earned many awards for the in-house brewed beer including awards from The Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup. The pub is responsible for twenty-six beers a year! The Southampton Publick House not only sells its wares on premises, but also to forty specialty restaurants and beer bars in Long Island and New York City.

Long Island is no slouch when it comes to good brews. If you are tired of the same old brews, you should venture to these establishments and taste for yourself the love and care that goes into a good quality brew made on Long Island. Newcomers to good brews may need some time to understand what makes these beers so special, but the seasoned beer drinker will know right away what sets these beers apart from their mass-produced peers in the supermarket.
