Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages: What a Way to Spend the Day

Located in the lovely and scenic area of Stony Brook, New York on Long Island is a wonderful museum that will appeal to individuals of all ages. Not only does this museum feature intriguing pieces of American art but features interesting showcases such as history and carriage displays. One can spend the entire day marveling at all the Long Island Museum has to offer.

Overview of What the Museum Features

As the name of the museum shows, the objects found within this museum include art, history and carriages but one probably wonders how these interesting articles are displayed. As for paintings and the like, the Art Museum area features two galleries where one will find various types of American art hanging within. The Margaret Melville Blackwell History Museum caters to the historical portion of the overall museum which includes a miniature rooms gallery which includes 15 period rooms and Bayman’s art including waterfowl decoys. The third largest area of the museum is the Dorothy and Ward Melville Carriage Museum which features ten galleries showing over 100 horse-drawn carriages and village replicas of the time in which horse-drawn carriages were popular.

Set amidst these three aforementioned larger exhibition areas are intermingling displays which show schoolhouses, barns, carriage sheds and a blacksmith shop. Fountains and gardens also beautify the area and make the scenery even that more beautiful.

General Information Regarding the Museum

The museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays as well as certain holidays. Admission prices are very reasonable when one considers all that they are getting for the price. Adults pay $7, $6 for Senior citizens and students 6-17 years of age as well as college students with proper identification pay $3. For the little ones under 6, the museum experience is free.

This museum is a great thing to put on an individual’s must see list if one is in the Long Island area.
