VANDERBILT MUSEUM AND PLANETARIUM

Spend the Day at the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium

There are many wonderful cultural establishments to spend the day at on Long Island. One in particular which sees its share of visitors is the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium. Bearing the name of the well-known family, the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium is a place which will delight and entertain all who step foot in this grand establishment. There are many exhibits and displays which make the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium the top place to visit in Suffolk County and perhaps all of Long Island.

The Museum Complex

Spanning 43 acres, the museum complex has a little bit of everything. For those interested in architecture and antiques, a tour of the mansion and accompanying structures and gardens may be the perfect day. With regard to those individuals who are more interested in taking in the artwork, there are a number of exhibits and displays which can be viewed. The museum complex is one that has a little something for everyone.

The Planetarium

The Vanderbilt Planetarium is the other portion of the establishment that provides informative tours and activities for its visitors. The main purpose of the planetarium is to teach people a little bit more about the nighttime sky. This is done through a variety of methods such as exhibits, lectures and of course, actually viewing the recreated nighttime sky inside of the planetarium. Planetariums are a wonderful way of teaching us a little bit more about astronomy and the Vanderbilt Planetarium staff does a great job of making the lectures both informative and interesting.

General Information

The museum portion is open from 12-4 pm Tuesdays through Fridays and 12-5pm Saturday and Sunday. The additional facilities such as the Mansion, Marine Museum, Natural History Exhibits, and Grounds are open from 12-5 pm Tuesday through Sunday. The Planetarium shows vary with regard to time depending upon the day. The admission fees for those who visit the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium vary depending upon the exhibit viewed or activity engaged in; however, an adult can purchase a day ticket for $7.00 and be able to tour various establishments including the grounds, museum galleries, mansion galleries and more. Activities and access to other buildings on the grounds such as the planetarium and mansion tour will cost minor additional fees. All things considered, the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium is a wonderful place to spend the day and can be accomplished for a reasonable price.
