We contracted a home remodel and gave the contractor a 2,000 deposit. The work was supposed to begin the first week of March. We contacted the contractor today to find out when the work can start and he proceeded to scream profanities at us on the phone, was verbally abusive and hung up the phone. We cannot allow this person in our house and want our money back. What's the best course of action.

Tessy,
That is terrible and horribly unbusiness like.. I completely understand you not wanting him in after that....
First thing I would do is take a deep breath and relax, because unfortunetly we've got to deal with things like this from time to time...
Next - I would send a reistered letter to the address on his contract and request that the work be canceled and deposit be refunded....
Hopefully, there wasn't anything laid-out for materials yet, but this should be somewhere in the contract.... If so, he could always give the materials to you.

Thank you. That's a very good idea. We will send him a letter to request termination of services based on breach of contract since he didn't start the work as stated in the contract. I will give him 5 days to pay before filing a claim in small claims court.
I'll keep you posted on what happens.

By the way, my husband and I are in the process of building an addition on our home for my elderly Dad. We "interviewed" many contractors over the past 9-10 months while waiting for architect plans, permits etc. and lucked out with a real jewel of a company - professional, reasonably priced, stays in close contact, etc. So if you need a GREAT general contractor use Landin Construction (Pete) in Bohemia. If you send me a private message I will give you his phone number. I can well understand your frustration. Some of the "questionable" contractors I would not even talk to alone - I insisted my DH be there too!
