Hello. My name is Tracy and I currently reside in Arkansas. My husband, children and I are relocating soon to Long Island and I have a few questions that hopefully some of you wouldn't mind answering for me. We were told the best area to live in, in Suffolk County is Stony Brook and secondly would be Riverhead. We were also told to look for houses for sale by owner. However, I am having a difficult time locating reasonably priced housing and am now looking into renting an apartment for a while. I knew the prices there were much more expensive then here in Arkansas (obviously) but I was surprised that a 2 bedroom, 2 bath home there runs over $250k when here it would be only about $80k.
Anyway, I am mainly looking for any information that someone wouldn't mind giving me on the best housing options, schools for a 6th grader, possible job links, etc. I am a legal secretary and have been for over 7 years now and so that is the route I am looking into job wise. Also, if someone could explain to me the travel route - meaning, I understand you have to take a train or a ferry from LI to New York City or other places just to work? Am I to understand that there aren't many jobs on LI and that you would have to travel by train or ferry just to get to work? Anyway, I would just like any information that you would be willing to offer. Also, if there are other nice places right outside Stony Brook or Riverhead that are less expensive but still in a good area, that would be appreciated as well.
Thanks in advance!

Hello Trace --- Welcome to Long Island Exchange! :)
There are plenty of nice places to live here on Long Island...
Suffolk County is a great place to start...
The cost of housing has gotten quite out-of-hand so it will be tough to find anything under 250,000 believe it or not..
Just a few years ago, I'd say the adverage price for a decent home was about $180,000, now you can't even think of looking at anything below $250 but most homes are in the $300 range....
As far as jobs there are still many jobs here on Long Island.... You can post a resume right here and hopefully you can find something...
Aslo try Newsday.com classifieds and CareerBuilder.com which I believe is one and the same.... Newsday is Long Island and New York's Major newspaper...
I live in the Babylon area, which is Western Suffolk County..
About 45 minuets into Manhatten with no traffic or you can ride the Long Island Rail Road to Manhatten in about 45 minuets to an hour if your traveling on peek and want to avoid traffic, but you may be able to find a good job right here on the island....
