Due to the spontaneity of the situation, you both had no expectations ( romantic agenda) and were able to communicate from a confident standpoint because neither of you had anything riding on the dialogue.
Humor and flirting skills
I also think that another essential ingredient is the humor. Bantering involves teasing and it tests wits.
If both people can keep their wits about them yet feel the challenge of the other person's wit, they are sure to become attracted to each other.
If there is no challenge, there won't be any attraction -- unless it is a one-sided attraction and challenge (the person who is less able to keep their wits about them will be challenged and attracted to the other).
Ambivalence is one of my all-time favorite words. It fits in below:
Some reasons why we fell in love
When engaging in a good bantering/teasing/flirting session, we feel two things:
1. The need to have our own good response. When we do, we are so proud of ourselves and we enjoy the feeling. We "translate" this to mean that the other person helps us to feel good about ourselves. And this is the reason many people report as the reason why they fell in love.
2. The need to be challenged: if the other person has a good response, our own mind is stimulated.
