Can anyone offer an objective opinions about Wheatley Heights? Crime levels compared to Dix Hills? Its closeness with Wyandanch? etc.. My family is looking for a mixed community to raise our kids, but want it safe and quiet..
Thanks for your time.

Wheatly heights is a very nice area...
But
it is very close to wyandanch which has an extreamly high crime rate...
I'd go for Dix Hills....
also a very nice area... near rt 231 Deer Park Avenue...

Is there another area in LI that is somewhat mixed, but not near Wyanddanch? In Suff Cty?
I like WHeights, SD #5 is very good! But living so close to Wy is a big concern!
What about West Bablyon?

I live in this area. I actually live in Deer Park and our school district is #5 as well (although most of Deer Park is not in district 5- you need to check). The school district is mixed very well. When we moved here 10 years ago we wanted a mixed community and a great school. We did not choose Wheatley Heights because of its closeness with Wyandanch...
Hope this helps.

Deer Park is a mixed community with people from different cultures. I would say it is mostly Italian, Polish, largely Catholic. We also have Black, Hispanic and Indian populations. Personally, I am of German Protestant background,
The Deer Park School district is fine for elementary schools, does have some gang problems at the higher grades as well as some academic problems. But any school district is what your child makes of it, the opportunities are there. When we decided to move here we definitely wanted the Dix Hills school district (which is district 5) but our pocketbook said Deer Park, Farmingdale, or Melville. Sections of those towns are in the District 5 school district. Real Estate agents will tell you that they are all good. Our own private research is what made us determined to be in District 5. The real estate agents know what district the house is in.
District 5 (Dix Hills) schools are also integrated with many population groups. However, it is an expensive district and sometimes that can be bothersome.
To circumvent the Deer Park school district some of my Catholic friends in Deer Park send their children to St. Cyrus Catholic School on Deer Park Ave. Rather expensive, I prefer to have my taxes pay for our children's education.
If you read today's Newday (02/01/04 you will see that news has just broken about a new Tangers Outlet Center which is planned a few years from now. The center will be in Deer Park, rather exciting news if it is planned properly with Babylon Town.
Hope all of this helps.
