MAKING THE NEW YEAR... YOUR BEST YEAR!!
As sure as the New Year brings promise and opportunity in our lives to better ourselves, we sometimes feel a peer pressure from the holiday to make changes. This peer pressure can sabotage your year if you are not careful. You may begin to feel that you want to accomplish too much, or that there is too much to get done. It is at this time that you must remember the key points that can help you overcome any obstacles or pressure that can potentially sabotage your success and hopes for this year in the long run. Here are a few tips to combating too high expectations and potential sabotagers:
Realize that you have plenty of time: You have to keep in mind that you have the whole year to your disposal. When we think of achieving all the things we want for the year, we expect immediate results, and we expect that they all must be achieved sooner than expected. This is a no no, and can add unnecessary pressure to yourself. Take a deep breath and relax. You have all year to work on these things.
Realize that you don't have to start working on everything at once: If you have a list of things you would like to accomplish for this year, I recommend that you apply a different start date for each of those things on the list (or as much of them as you can), so you are not working on 6 goals at once. For example; choose 1 or 2 to start with, and then start 1 or 2 more goals, shortly after you have reached the target date for the first 2. It would also be wise to determine how much time you would need to accomplish each of these goals, so that way you can better plan your time line for the year.
Set aside uninterrupted time to work on your goals!!: Make sure that this year, you set aside time just for your goals. And make sure this time has the least chance of being interrupted. If you want to achieve something, you have to make it a real part of your life. Thinking about once in a while, or working on it once in a while is not enough!
Break down the goal into smaller steps: This one is the most commonly used goal attainment technique, but you would be surprised how many people forget to do it! Start with baby steps. One small step a day for a week, then 2 small steps for the next week, and so on and so on. You need to build your ability for goal work slowly. Remember, you have the whole year.
Enlist a resolution buddy or get a coach: I know better than anyone else how difficult it is to feel alone in your goal attainment endeavor. Sometimes you may feel you have no one to keep you motivated, or simply someone to share your progress, feelings, concerns, fears, and triumphs with. Do not ignore this!! I have many resolution buddies and more than one coach!! And if you need to share your accomplishments with someone, just give me a call or send me an email... I love hearing about others achievements!!
Enjoy the process and celebrate!: Enjoy and celebrate every little achievement you make along the way. You must make a daily practice of self-appreciation. It further instills your self-importance, a concept vital in goal achievement. Because after all... If you don't think your worth it, then why do it in the first place?
I hope that these hints are helpful to you and give you just the edge you need in achieving your New Years Resolutions this year, and if you ever need any further assistance or advice, we are always here for you!
