Message boards volunteer guidelines
Mission statement
Board hosts help maintain a safe and enjoyable message board environment for all site visitors by encouraging participation and helping enforce LongIslandExchange.com's community guidelines and user agreement.
Structure
Community manager: The community manager (i.e., board manager) recruits, trains and manages the board host volunteer team.
Board hosts: Board hosts are volunteers who help LongIslandExchange.com manage day-to-day message board activities and uphold community guidelines and the user agreement. Board hosts volunteer in a particular subject area, such as Long Island News or Long Island Night Life topics.
Responsibilities
Visiting assigned boards on a consistent basis, preferably one to two times per week, minimum
Responding to every post by members in a timely manner, when appropriate
Suggesting new topics of conversation and contributing to conversations started by members
Communicating with the board manager about activities, problems, challenges, policies and other issues related to the board.
Host access: Board hosts receive special host-access capabilities within their areas. These "tools" enable the host to delete and edit board content. This special access requires using sound judgement and discretion. Questions should be directed to the board manager or discussed with other board hosts.
Referring members to other areas of LongIslandExchange.com when necessary.
Assist in upholding LongIslandExchange.com community guidelines and the user agreement for member participation (See Privacy Policy). This task may include deleting inappropriate posts and communicating these issues to other members. It requires discretion, sound judgement and sensitivity.
Actions
Help: Host should respond to requests for assistance or direct members to the appropriate "help" area.
Board activity and promotion: Host should participate in board conversations and encourage member participation by inviting comments, posing questions and other activities. Board hosts are encouraged to notify the board manager of particularly interesting and active threads, and highlight member contributions.
Violations: When a message board participant posts a message that is in violation of site terms or message board rules, the board host should delete the post, and alert the board manager (via email or in the appropriate staff message board).
Note: All actions taken by a board hosts in relation to their volunteer responsibilities should be conducted using their board host member name (i.e., "name_boardhost").
