Anybody here do any fresh water fishing on the Island? You'd be surprised at the size of largemouth bass in a lot of our ponds--I'm talking even 5 acre ponds. I've caught many 3 to 5 pounders in places like Grant Park, Blydenberg, etc.

I'd tell you some terrific whoppers both in fish size and outright lies, but nobody's listening. A man's gotta have an audience to lie convincingly. Hell what else is there?

Hi rich. That's some good info you've posted, especially on the clamming. I was born on L.I, Suffolk county. My family moved to Northern KY when I was 5, and I still live here in KY (but have lots of relatives still living on L.I.) and fish where the Licking river meets the Ohio river.
I really enjoy fishing, and there is a nice variety of fish to be caught right off the point where I fish. There are HUGE stripers,Blue,Channel, and Flathead catfish, and also carp, perch, bluegill, gar, skipjack and sauger.
I mainly target flatheads, bluecats and stripers.I practice catch and release always, except for the occasional channel cat that a homeless person may ask if he may take to fix for dinner for him and his fellow homeless buddies.
The flatheads I have seen caught here are anywhere from 5-50 lbs (that's why most of my poles are 10 ft surfrods). My personal best is still only 15 lbs for flathead and 13 lbs for bluecat. I don't eat the fish out of the Ohio.If I want to fix fish for dinner, I go to Kroger and buy it.LOL Well, happy fishing and clamming ,Rich...

Thanks, Sunny.
It's nice to be able to fish both fresh and salt. You being from Long Island you know there aren't too many freshwater places to catch species like smallmouths, walleye, etc. The best sport fish on Long Island is Largemouth, and they come pretty big here for a northern state.
Incidentally, I had a story in Field & Stream about freshwater fishing, and another one in The Front Porch Syndicate that has Grant Park in Nassau County as its setting.
Bass season in Nassau and Suffolk starts the first Saturday in April. A few friends and I are always at Blydenberg Park the Monday after. I caught a six-pounder there last year. We do all catch & release in freshwater. In fact, Nassau County is all catch and release. Suffolk has a five fish limit.

Hey, you show me yours and I'll show you mine. It's much harder to tell a tall tale than it is to tell the truth. That's what fishing's all about.
