Roosevelt Field Mall is a large, upscale, suburban shopping mall, situated at the intersection of Old Country Road and Meadowbrook Parkway in Garden City, New York. Roosevelt Field Mall is named in memory of Quentin Roosevelt – the son of President Theodore Roosevelt – who was killed in air combat during World War I. The mall was designed by architect I.M. Pei and the sculpture inside by artist Sol Lewitt.
Roosevelt Field Mall, which boasts more than 260 specialty stores and four anchors (Bloomingdale's, JC Penney, Macy's and Nordstrom), is an ideal place for shopping. Roosevelt Field Mall features wide, well-lit corridors, comfy seating, and numerous restaurants offering a wide assortment of dishes. There are also eight movie therates screening the top Holywood movies.
Opened in 1956, Roosevelt Field Mall was the largest of its kind at that time. The mall was built on the site where Charles Lindergh took off on his historic trans-Atlantic flight. There was a plaque at the north end of the mall - in the hall which now links JC Penney and Dick’s – which marked the spot where Charles Lindbergh left the ground. Today, the plaque is placed inside the mall, outside of the Disney Store. According to the tour guides at the Cradle of Aviation Museum, in Long Island, New York, the exact spot from which Lindbergh's airplane left the ground is located in the area of the fire exit from the Fortunoff department store.
The mall was renovated in the late 1990s. During the renovation process a second level was added on top of the existing structure. Currently, Roosevelt Field Mall is the 11th largest in the country in terms of leasable square footage. The mall enjoys a third position when counting the most profitable malls based on sales per square foot.
Though the Roosevelt Field Mall ulilizes the esteemed Garden City address, the mall is located outside the village limits, and so it is not required to pay taxes to the village.
Ideally located off of the Meadowbrook Parkway, Roosevelt Field Mall can be easily accessed from the Long Island Expressway, Northern State Parkway, and Southern State Parkway. It is also a major hub of MTA Long Island Bus, with numerous bus routes stopping in a terminal area a few blocks from the eastern parking structure.
