Save the Internet : Fighting for Internet Freedom
The United States Congress is pushing a law that would abandon the Internet's First Amendment -- a principle called Network Neutrality that prevents companies like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast from deciding which Web sites work best for you -- based on what site pays them the most. If the public doesn't speak up now, our elected officials will cave to a multi-million dollar lobbying campaign.
The House of Representives voted against an amendment that would make Net Neutrality enforceable is the result of swarming lobbyists and a multi-million-dollar media campaign by telephone companies that want Congress to hand them control of the Internet. The fight now moves to the Senate, where there is stronger bi-partisan support for a bill - put forth by Senators Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) and Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota) - that would protect our Internet freedom from AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth. The supporters of Net Neutrality include leading high-tech companies such as BurstNET, Amazon.com, Earthlink, EBay, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Skype, Vonage and Yahoo.
What is network neutrality?
Network Neutrality - or "Net Neutrality" for short - is the guiding principle that preserves the free and open Internet.
Net Neutrality ensures that all users can access the content or run the applications and devices of their choice.
With Net Neutrality, the network's only job is to move data - not choose which data to privilege with higher quality service.
Net Neutrality is the reason why the Internet has driven economic innovation, democratic participation, and free speech online.
It's why the Internet has become an unrivaled environment for open communications, civic involvement and free speech.
