(11/14/03) EAST MEADOW – Many Long Island residents were angry when they opened their reassessment letters to find out their taxes have been raised. The letters contain the first updated values in Nassau County since the system was overhauled.
Since the first reassessment began, a Massapequa homeowner has seen his taxes go from $4,800 to $8,700. Residents in that area are upset because they say homes in the area aren’t selling for the prices that the county estimates.
A retired schoolteacher from East Meadow will have to pay an additional $600 in taxes under the new plan. The new tax figures are based on her home, a one-bedroom 600 square foot cottage, worth $255,000.
Anyone who disagrees with the new assessments can file an informal review by November 21. If the request is rejected there is a formal appeal process, which will take place from January through March.
