Farnsworth's suspension cut to 1 game (AP) Kyle Farnsworth's suspension was cut from three games to one Friday by Major League Baseball following an appeal by the New York Yankees reliever. Bob Watson, baseball's vice president in charge of discipline, announced the original penalty April 19, two days after Farnsworth threw a fastball behind the neck of Boston Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez.




Arizona's Webb goes to 8-0 with 6-hitter (AP)

Cubs activate Eyre, send Marshall down (AP) The Chicago Cubs activated left-handed reliever Scott Eyre from the 15-day disabled list Friday and optioned left-handed pitcher Sean Marshall to Triple-A Iowa. Eyre has missed the first 34 games this season with left elbow inflammation. He said Friday he has been taking medication for arthritis in the joint.


Reds put LHP Mercker on 15-day DL (AP) Reliever Kent Mercker was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday by the Cincinnati Reds because of lower back pain. The move was made retroactive to Tuesday, before the start of its series at the New York Mets. The Reds recalled left-hander Bill Bray from Triple-A Louisville. Kason Gabbard threw an eye-high pitch at Richie Sexson. That was it for the Mariners 6-foot-8 first baseman. He charged the mound, sparking a fourth-inning brawl in Texas' 5-0 win over Seattle on Wednesday night. "I'm 6-foot-8. He can hit corners at will," Sexson said. Beckett gets 1,000th K, BoSox top Tigers (AP)

Arizona LHP Davis pronounced cancer free (AP) Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Doug Davis said he has been pronounced cancer free after a sophisticated test showed no spread of the disease. Davis said he got the news from surgeon Dr. Bob Evani, who removed the pitcher's cancerous thyroid gland on April 10. "The cancer did not spread and it will not spread from here on out," Davis said Thursday......

Jason Giambi and the sluggish New York Yankees suddenly turned sluggerish. The Yankees played home run derby Thursday, with Giambi, Johnny Damon, Robinson Cano and Wilson Betemit connecting in a 6-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians that prevented a three-game sweep. "There were big hits up and down the lineup," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
