A storm surge up to 30 feet high crashed ashore leaving ruins behind and at least 80 feared dead. Bodies have been reported to be seen floating among the flooded streets and canals. More than a million people were without power across Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama. Water supplies were compromised and collapsed communications left large areas cut off from the outside world, authorities said. Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco told reporters We know that many lives have been lost. President George W. Bush has declared Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama as disaster areas, making residents eligible for federal assistance if they don't have insurance or damages exceed their insurance coverage. "The federal, state and local governments are working side by side to do all we can to help people get back on their feet and we have got a lot of work to do," - said Mr. Bush.
