BETHPAGE STATE PARK

BETHPAGE STATE PARK
Farmingdale

Sports reservation

The Bethpage State Park on Long Island is a powerful statement on the place of sport in 21st century life. Automobiles and elevators have taken away an essential exercise component that human physiology needs to maintain wellness. Muscle tone, lung capacity and perspiration are three essential processes that keep us fit. These concrete considerations add body to the stress-busting aspect of working out, and the joys of competition and participation. New York State can always point to the Bethpage State Park to prove its commitment to providing healthy outdoor life to citizens. The fair name of these greens has spread so far, that even people who reside elsewhere love to play a round of golf at the Bethpage State Park on Long Island.

The reflex association with golf whenever the Bethpage State Park is mentioned is misplaced. There are many other sports and games for people to enjoy in the fresh and youthful atmosphere of this delightful stretch of manicured grass, flowering shrubs and stately trees. Handicap access to the polo field is a typical example of the care that State Park authorities have taken to ensure that everyone can enjoy refreshing interludes of fun in their lives. The Bethpage State Park is there just for you, whether you are a cross-country skiing fanatic or just a picnic potato! There are plenty of courts with all kinds of surfaces, where you can indulge in tennis and the common ball games, or perhaps invent one of your own!

Horse riding is a pastime that can be quite addictive, hence followers of equine sports who reside in the midst of commercially valuable realty, always place a premium on some preserved pieces of wilderness with enjoyable trails and place for stables. The Bethpage State Park is the place for you if you live in or within striking distance of Long Island and need to spend quality leisure time stroking, caring for and sitting on horses. It is only natural that the equestrian facilities suit those who like their exercise on foot or on two-wheeled pedal-power. Cyclists and hikers have much to which they can look forward in the green and brown mounds and tracks of the Bethpage State Park.

We can play tootsie with appetizers for limited time, but the entree must inevitably come to the fore. A professional golf shop is a tell-tale signal that the Bethpage State Park, at the end of the day, is biased in favor of one sport and its crazed followers. Authorities may protest, but in vain, for why do they not sell tennis racquets, bicycle tire tubes or apples for obedient horses? The driving range is a common compromise for those who fight to stop losing spouses and friends to the crushing power of a set of clubs, but nurse secret desire to have a whack for themselves! It is also an effective way of fighting frustration of bets lost to some wayward putting!

The Black Course is the best known of the deck of five 18-hole regulation stretches of inviting green, traps of sand and water and the stuff of much agony with touches of occasional ecstasy. The US Open here in 2002 evoked such emotion that another has been reserved from now for 2009. 300 thousand rounds are played here every year, and they all radiate from a sacred Clubhouse. They say that name-dropping Bethpage State Park evokes instant respect in golfing circles all over the world!

Bethpage State Park, a mecca for public golf featuring five 18-hole regulation golf courses including the world-renowned Black Course which was the site of the United States Open in 2002, will again host the U.S. Open in 2009. Bethpage State Park was developed from an estate owned by the Yoakum family and other properties. The Yoakum family leased their estate to the Lenox Hills Corporation which subsequently used the property to build the Lenox Hills Country Club. In the early 1930s, the Bethpage Park Authority purchased the Lenox Hills Country Club and other adjacent properties to build what we now know as Bethpage State Park. Famed golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast was hired to design and oversee construction of three new golf courses (Black, Red and Blue) as well as modify the Lenox Hills Course which became the Green Course. Due to the increased demand for golf, the Yellow Course designed by Alfred Tull was opened in 1958. Approximately 300,000 rounds are played annually on the five courses at Bethpage, all of which start from the Clubhouse area.

In addition to golf, visitors to the park may utilize the tennis courts, hiking trails, bridle path, picnic area for additional recreational activities. Catering Facilities are available. There are also weekly polo matches from mid-June through mid-October. Call park office for more information.

Black Course
The Black Course is a difficult and challenging course that should be played only by low-handicap golfers. The course is for walkers only and its slope rating is one of the highest in the northeast. This was one of the last courses designed by master golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast, and is said by many to be his finest work. The Black Course served as the site of the 102nd U.S. Open Championship in 2002. Our National Championship will again return to the Black in 2009. The narrow fairways, high roughs, well placed bunkers and small greens help to make this an extremely difficult course.

The Black Course is closed Mondays for course maintenance except holidays.
