How Podcasting Works: Before delving into the topic of discussion, let us first take a look at what podcasting is all about.

Podcasting, which derives its name after the popular portal digital audio device iPod, is a way of distributing multimedia files (audio files or music videos) over the internet and the users in turn can download it and store or playback in his/her iPod, PC, or any other mobile audio device as and how he/she wishes. Podcasts are generally distributed using RSS feeds or Atom syndicate formats.

Now, let us see how podcasting works. In order to listen to a podcast, what the users have to do is to connect their iPods or an MP3 player to their computers and find and subscribe to a podcast website. But it must be kept in mind that your audio device needs to have a compatible RSS reading software program to decode the podcast files and play it correctly. iPodderX is such a software tailor made for iPods and could manage the same if you are using an mp3 player or the PC to download and store the podcasts.

Further, you can download the podcasts manually or you can choose to configure the softwares in such a way that it downloads the files automatically, as and when a new podcasts appears, and uploads it to your iPod or mp3 player. By opting for the latter method, you can ensure that your PC or iPod will always has the latest podcasts stored in it, without you having to lift a hand or move a finger to search the internet for the new file even once. It is automation at its very best.

Now to the other side of podcasting - creating a podcast. Take my word, it is not as difficult or complex as it may sound. All you need to create a podcast is a PC, microphone, headphone, the required source of sound (a music video or a lecture on some topic), and the software to convert the sound files into a podcast. SoundBed and SoundFlower are two free programs that could help one with the conversion. The podcasts can then be uploaded to a website with its RSS feeds set up properly and other users can access these files by subscribing to the service.

Vodcast (Video on Demand Cast), the video version of podcast, has hit the markets of late and it is compatible portable devices ranging from iPod to Creative's iRiver to Sony's PSP and a whole new range of phones that could store and play videos.
