Please interact with these professionals whose sole objective is to protect our children, our material possessions and us. They lay their lives on the line for us and face all the tension, stress and danger that is inherent in their jobs with general equanimity.

We can play important roles in helping our Police protect the community and property. There are a host of issues that we tend to take for granted. This has to change and it is up to us to approach the men and women who give their lives for us and follow their instructions in our best interests. We could have valid points of view as well, and the Police are always willing to listen to how they can work better with folks.

5 matters for community dialogue with the Police are:

• How we can improve homeland security together.
• What we should do as parents and caring adults to keep children safe from abuse and every form of danger.
• Awareness of how to respond in an emergency and our roles in such situations to help the Police set priorities for relief and restore order as quickly as possible.
• Protection of our homes and offices, using both sound common sense and the best technology.
• Our rights and responsibilities when we stand accused of crime and how we should cooperate to see justice done.

Police are highly trained professionals. They have to work in some very trying circumstances and with severe resource constraints as well. Let us join hands with them and act as model citizens. Crime rates will drop like a stone and our loved ones can roam free, secure in the orderly and watchful environment that is ours to build. Promote security with their help and set standards for the rest of New York and indeed our entire Nation to follow.
