Underwriting support from BookHampton allows Bay Street to continue this program favorite on the East End. Quartet is set in a home for retired opera stars during preparations for Verdi’s birthday celebration. Three former colleagues are at hilarious odds, but not over the selection they plan to perform, but over the arrival of the newest resident, a diva with whom they once sang the celebrated “Quartet,” from Rigoletto. Director Jack Hofsiss won a Tony® Award in 1979 for his production of The Elephant Man. He has also directed Pippin (2005), A Christmas Carol (2004) with Paul Hecht as Ebenezer Scrooge, Our Town (2002), You Can’t Take It With You (2000) and Splendora (1995) at Bay Street Theatre. In addition to Quartet, the 2006 Target Mainstage Season features the classic rock musical The Who’s Tommy, book by Pete Townshend and Des McAnuff; with music and lyrics by Pete Townshend. Marcia Milgrom Dodge will direct this riveting Tony® Award winning musical. Euan Morton, who played Boy George in Taboo on Broadway and in London, will play Tommy. The Who’s Tommy will run from June 13 – July 9. The World Premiere of VIVA LA VIDA!, by Diane Shaffer and directed by Susana Tubert will run from July 18 – August 6. The Oscar® and Tony® award winning Mercedes Ruehl will play Frida Kahlo, in this play that depicts Frida in the last 18 months of her incredible life. The human spirit prevails in this stylish and uniquely theatrical experience. “I am certainly not alone among actresses to be drawn to portray the fabulous and inscrutable Frida Kahlo. Vulnerable and fierce, haughty and down to earth, funny and infinitely suffering--she is a flame at the center of all these paradoxes and we are the moths; what a challenge!” said actress Mercedes Ruehl. The place is Malibu. The time is now. In Darwin in Malibu, Charles Darwin is seen relaxing on a deck chair overlooking the Pacific…suddenly he is joined by two contemporaries. The debate over evolution, begun over a century ago, continues anew in this hilarious and topical new comedy. The Target 2006 Mainstage Season is made possible in part through a generous underwriting gift by Target Corporation. Subscription ticket packages for 3 or 4 shows are available through July 9. Single tickets are available until each show sells out. Tickets and subscriptions can also be purchased online at www.baystreet.org, or by calling 631-725-9500.
