LIPA Issues Conservation Reminder Long Island Facing Another Record Breaking Day Hicksville, NY - July 18, 2006 - As the metropolitan area enters a third day of high temperatures and humidity, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) reminds its customers to conserve electricity as much as possible during this current heat wave. LIPA Chairman, Richard M., Kessel said that LIPA has 6100 Megawatts (MW) of electricity available to meet today's projected peak demand forecast of 5600 MW which would break yesterday's record of 5340 MW. As of 12:00 PM LIPA is running 120 MW ahead of yesterday's record usage. Today's margin of 500 MW will help to avoid power shortages, but it also underscores the need to continue to add resources to meet demand. Kessel said that LIPA has added 1100MW of new supply in the past few years without which Long Island would have experienced blackouts and brownouts today. Kessel said that while supplies are sufficient, customers should use electricity conservatively, to maintain the system if something goes wrong, and to help keep customer bills down. "Right now, every megawatt matters," said LIPA Chairman Richard Kessel. "Doing little things to conserve can add up to significant savings, which will help keep the lights on for everyone during this period of high demand." LIPA customers should: * Eliminate non-essential electric consumption; "Using electricity wisely saves resources, saves money and saves the environment," said Kessel, "Everyone needs to conserve as much electricity as possible during the heat wave to help stretch our available supply as far as possible." High temperatures and high electric demand can sometimes cause scattered heat-related outages. LIPA advises that conserving electricity will help reduce the potential for outages. Customers who experience an outage should call 1-800- 490-0075. Additional energy conservation tips can be obtained from LIPA's Web site, www.lipower.org, or by calling its EnergyWise Infoline at 1-800-692-2626.
