LIPA Launches Enhanced Web Site Section to Help Customers Track Outages New Maps Will Plot General Location of Service Interruptions Hicksville, NY -- July 29, 2005 - The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) today announced at the conclusion of its joint annual hurricane season preparedness drill with KeySpan that its Web site, www.lipower.org, will now display interactive maps that will show the general location and number of outages impacting LIPA's electric customers on a community-by-community basis. LIPA's enhanced Outage Report Section, located at www.lipower.org/stormcenter, will also show a list of communities served by LIPA along with the number of customers served. The list will also post the number of customers within that community who are experiencing a service outage with the total number of customers served in that location. "This is a new interactive map section that will help keep our customers, public and emergency response officials, news organizations and interested observers up-to-date on any service interruptions that may occur on our system on a 24/7 basis," said LIPA Chairman Richard M. "In storm situations, this enhanced section will help customers understand how storms can impact sections of Long Island differently. Mr. Kessel indicated that the outage report section is updated every thirty minutes and will display the latest information available, and during storm situations it could be accessed via wireless internet connections and by those within the service area unaffected by a service interruption. LIPA first used a map on its Web site to show how Long Island was recovering from the August 2003 Blackout. Nearly 36,000 visits were made to the Blackout Restoration Map over a 24-hour period. At that time LIPA's Web site received about 38,000 visits per month. LIPA's Web site contains a wealth of information on how to prepare for major storms, how to conserve energy, project development information, A non-profit municipal electric utility, LIPA owns the retail electric system on Long Island and provides electric service to over 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. LIPA does not own any electric generation assets on Long Island, and it does not provide natural gas service. Contact Information: Press Release 07/29/05 1:25 PM Eastern |
