LIPA Sets New Electricity Demand Records During Summer 2005

KeySpan Generating Plants Get High Marks for Reliability in Helping to Meet Increased Demand

Uniondale, NY - September 29, 2005 - Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Chairman Richard M. Kessel announced today that several new electric demand records were set during the "long hot summer" of 2005, and that LIPA successfully met the increased demand with the new supply resources it brought on line in recent years. And, Key Span Chairman Robert B.Catell announced that KeySpan's on-island generation facilities set high standards for reliability in helping to meet the new electricity demand records.

A new peak hour demand record of 5,267 megawatts (MW) of electricity delivered to the Long Island Control Area (LICA) was set on August 5, which was 28 MWs higher than the previous peak hour record of 5,239 MWs set less than a month earlier on July 19. The new peak demand record beat the previous summer peak set in July, 2003 by over 700 MWs. In
fact, nine of the top ten summer peak demand records occurred during the summer of 2005, and all nine exceeded the 5,000 MW mark.

In recent years, to meet the ever increasing demand for electricity and provide reliable delivery, LIPA added 1,111 MWs of new supply resources and expended over $1.5 billion to upgrade its Transmission and Distribution system islandwide.

"It is clear that Long Island's electrical usage continues to grow at a pace that far exceeds the areas population growth," said LIPA Chairman Richard M. Kessel. "LIPA is proud of the work that has been accomplished to meet the growing need, but this is a challenge that all Long Islanders must work together to meet. Conserving electricity is not a seasonal pursuit. All of us must do all we can throughout the year to use electricity wisely."

KeySpan's power plants on Long Island also successfully helped meet the new electric demand records by setting high standards for reliability."KeySpan is proud to once again have an extraordinary track record on power plant reliability during this very hot summer," said Robert B. Catell, Chairman and CEO of KeySpan, which owns and operates the
on-island power plants that provide LIPA with the majority of its electric supply. "KeySpan's major steam power plants were available more than 99% of the time, with one Northport and one Glenwood unit delivering power to the system an extraordinary 100% of the time. On August 5, one of the hottest days of the summer, LIPA customers consumed a record peak hour load of 5,267 megawatts of electricity, at which time KeySpan's plants operated at 100%."

LIPA also delivered record amounts of electricity to the South Fork and Fire Island. On Saturday, August 13, the South Fork consumed 217 MWs of power at peak, which beat the previous record of 195 MW set on July 4, 2002. On that same day, Fire Island required nearly 17.2 MWs of electricity to meet peak demand, setting a new record and surpassing the
previous record of 16.9 MWs.

LIPA also set a new record for the total amount of electricity delivered over a five-day period this summer. A total of 468,183 Megawatt Hours (MWH) were delivered to Long Island between Monday, July 18 and Friday, July 22. The next highest five-day period occurred in July 2002 when 462,374 MWHs were consumed on Long Island.

LIPA also set a one-day weekend peak record of 5,140 MWs on Saturday, August 12, beating the old record by 714 MWs.

Record Summer Demand Statistics:
* Eight of top 10 South Fork peaks occurred in 2005.
* Four of top 10 Fire Island peaks occurred in 2005.
* Nine of the top ten summer peak demand records occurred in 2005.
* New June Peak Load: 5008 MW.
* New July Peak Load: 5239 MW.
* New August Peak Load: 5267 MW.
* New September Peak Demand: 4325 MW
* New weekend day peak load of 5140 MW, which was set on Saturday,
8/12/05 and exceeded both the previous Saturday peak of 4426 MW set on
7/5/03 by over 700 MW and the previous Sunday peak of 4462 MW set on
8/18/02.

KeySpan Generation Highlights:

* Major steam plants available more than 99% of the time
* One Northport unit and one Glenwood unit delivered power 100% of the time
* All 57 units had a better than 98% availability record, the same as summer 2004, and better than summer 2003
* On August 5, the day LIPA set a new peak demand record, KeySpan power plants delivered 62% of the supply

"During this period of record breaking usage, LIPA had an adequate supply of electricity to reliably meet the increased demand. We still urge our customers, however, to use electricity efficiently," said Mr. Kessel. "In light of recent national events that may have a profound and long-term impact on the cost of oil and natural gas, it is imperative that all Long islanders conserve energy at every opportunity to help keep their energy bills down.

For money saving energy conservation tips, consumers can log on to LIPA's Web site at www.lipower.org, or call its energy conservation infoline at 1-800-692-2626.

A non-profit municipal electric utility, LIPA owns the retail electric system on Long Island and provides electric service to over 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. LIPA does not own any electric generation assets on Long Island, and it does not provide natural gas service.
