LIPA Sets New Electricity Demand Records During Summer 2005 KeySpan Generating Plants Get High Marks for Reliability in Helping to Meet Increased Demand Uniondale, NY - September 29, 2005 - Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Chairman Richard M. Kessel announced today that several new electric demand records were set during the "long hot summer" of 2005, and that LIPA successfully met the increased demand with the new supply resources it brought on line in recent years. And, Key Span Chairman Robert B.Catell announced that KeySpan's on-island generation facilities set high standards for reliability in helping to meet the new electricity demand records. A new peak hour demand record of 5,267 megawatts (MW) of electricity
delivered to the Long Island Control Area (LICA) was set on August 5,
which was 28 MWs higher than the previous peak hour record of 5,239 MWs
set less than a month earlier on July 19. The new peak demand record
beat the previous summer peak set in July, 2003 by over 700 MWs. In In recent years, to meet the ever increasing demand for electricity and provide reliable delivery, LIPA added 1,111 MWs of new supply resources and expended over $1.5 billion to upgrade its Transmission and Distribution system islandwide. "It is clear that Long Island's electrical usage continues to grow at a pace that far exceeds the areas population growth," said LIPA Chairman Richard M. Kessel. "LIPA is proud of the work that has been accomplished to meet the growing need, but this is a challenge that all Long Islanders must work together to meet. Conserving electricity is not a seasonal pursuit. All of us must do all we can throughout the year to use electricity wisely." KeySpan's power plants on Long Island also successfully helped meet the
new electric demand records by setting high standards for reliability."KeySpan is proud to once again have an extraordinary track record on
power plant reliability during this very hot summer," said Robert B.
Catell, Chairman and CEO of KeySpan, which owns and operates the LIPA also delivered record amounts of electricity to the South Fork and
Fire Island. On Saturday, August 13, the South Fork consumed 217 MWs of
power at peak, which beat the previous record of 195 MW set on July 4,
2002. On that same day, Fire Island required nearly 17.2 MWs of
electricity to meet peak demand, setting a new record and surpassing the LIPA also set a one-day weekend peak record of 5,140 MWs on Saturday, August 12, beating the old record by 714 MWs. Record Summer Demand Statistics: KeySpan Generation Highlights: * Major steam plants available more than 99% of the time "During this period of record breaking usage, LIPA had an adequate supply of electricity to reliably meet the increased demand. We still urge our customers, however, to use electricity efficiently," said Mr. Kessel. "In light of recent national events that may have a profound and long-term impact on the cost of oil and natural gas, it is imperative that all Long islanders conserve energy at every opportunity to help keep their energy bills down. A non-profit municipal electric utility, LIPA owns the retail electric system on Long Island and provides electric service to over 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. LIPA does not own any electric generation assets on Long Island, and it does not provide natural gas service.
