Emily Civitella, a middle school student from Deer Park, won “Miss Jr. Turn It Up” at their Long Island Regional Competition
(ISLIP, NY) – Winning the title award at a dance competition is a major accomplishment. For Emily Civitella, a Deer Park resident that just recently turned twelve, this is her second time receiving this honor. Emily represented her studio, Dance Connection (located in Islip, NY), when competing this past weekend.

Emily performed her solo, “It’s All About Me”, when she competed at Turn It Up Dance Challenge, along with her teammates. Her solo was adjudicated with a Platinum award – the highest award possible at this competition. The platinum trophy Emily brought home for her solo was one of many Platinum awards taken home by Dance Connection. In fact, every group routine brought home Platinum awards.
Upon receiving the trophy and tiara that accompany her title, Miss Civitella said, “I was thrilled when I heard my name called for title and happy that all my hard work paid off.” Her hard work certainly did pay off. She is usually at the studio dancing and practicing between six and seven days per week. She attends over eight dance classes per week, acts as a student helper for younger student’s classes, and rehearses for the Dance Connection Competition Team and their Recital Company on top of that, all while remaining on the honor roll in middle school.
This is the second time Emily has won a title award at a competition. Last season, she won title at Power of Dance, a competition that, in leiu of trophies, awards monetary grants to charities of the dancer’s choice. Emily’s win at Power of Dance raised money for the Suffolk County Chapter of the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
Dance Connection was founded in 1989 on Sunrise Hwy. in East Islip. Since then, the company has grown to a 5,000 sqft state-of-the-art facility on Freeman Ave. in Islip.
