Dowling College Partnered with Rock and Wrap It Up and Suffolk County
Reducing Poverty Footprint and Carbon Footprint
(Oakdale, N.Y.) Dowling College partnered with Rock and Wrap It Up and Suffolk County to further green and reduce poverty in the County. Dowling students who live in both the Oakdale Residence Hall, located at the Rudolph Campus and the Brookhaven Residential Village, located at the Brookhaven campus, donated and collected assets including non-perishable food, toiletries, appliances, clothing, shelving and small furniture.
Rock and Wrap It Up! is a national anti-poverty think tank. Using greening tactics, the organization develops and recovers food and other assets to be given to agencies fighting poverty, increasing their budgets. This allows the agencies to hire more services such as green collar jobs training, tutors, social workers, job placement counselors and mental health counselors to attack the cause of poverty.
In Suffolk County’s 2009 State of the County address, County Executive Steve Levy said, “We embarked upon a Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness. Another way we can care for those in need will be through a not-for-profit program called Rock and Wrap It Up! where we will coordinate with hotels and universities to ensure that food, toiletries and other surplus items do not go into the waste stream, but rather to agencies that help the less fortunate.”
Rock and Wrap It Up!, Suffolk County and Colleges with campuses in Suffolk County first met in April 2009. The Rock and Wrap It Up! Give and Go Green Asset Recovery Program partners with colleges and universities nation-wide to help the impoverished receive assets through these recovery efforts. Dowling College is one of the first to participate in the “Give and Go Green” program in Suffolk County.
