Long Island Press Releases

(RIVERHEAD, NY) Stand up paddle boarders, kayakers, and canoeists from Long Island are set to paddle in downtown Riverhead, NY next month on Saturday, July 20 in a waterfront event that is first of its kind in the area and set to raise money for two East End not-for-profits, the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation and the East End Tourism Alliance.

Racers can participate in up to eight events in the Paddle Battle LI event, with age categories beginning at 13 and ranging to 60+.

“We are on an island surround by water, this is an event that will not only showcase the natural resources we have right here in our backyard,” said Bryan DeLuca. “But is also meant to highlight the mission of, and direct funds to, both the Foundation and the Tourism Alliance.”

The event fits with Long Island Convention & Visitor’s Bureau mission as well – to create events on Long Island that help to promote tourism, recreation, and economic development, while also focusing on the environment and its waterways.

The day’s events includes up to eight races, with a 2.5-mile amateur race all the way to a 12-mile elite class, anything goes, race. Some races include a pair of two-person canoe and kayaks, and are not just limited to single-person entries.

First Place medals will be offered at all levels, with the opportunity for all (including those watching from the shore) to enter to win a stand up paddle board for $10.00 / raffle, courtesy of Focus SUP Boards.

Registration starts at 7:30am on the Peconic Waterfront – check Web site for various race times. Entry fees are $50.00/pp; $65.00 on race day. Rental canoes and kayaks are available for $40.00. Life vests are required; all participants must wear their own PFD (personal floatation device) during the race. Complete pre-registration details are at or find us on Facebook @

In the event of severe weather, Paddle Battle LI will be held on Sunday, July 21.
