NEWFIELD HIGH SCHOOL SQUARES OFF AGAINST LINDENHURST HIGH SCHOOL IN TENTH SEASON OF THE LONG ISLAND CHALLENGE
Academic Quiz Show to Air Exclusively on News 12
Bethpage, NY…December 26, 2006… Newfield High School will kick off the tenth anniversary year of The Long Island Challenge by taking on Lindenhurst High School in round one of the academic quiz show designed to tests students’ knowledge in a Jeopardy-style format. This first round match-up between Newfield and Lindenhurst will air exclusively on News 12 Long Island at 6:30 pm and 9:30 pm on Saturday, January 6, 2007 with an encore airing the very next night Sunday, January 7th, at 6:30 pm and 9:30 pm.
“We are teaching students across the tri-state that being smart is radically cool. By showcasing these bright students each week, we are underscoring Cablevision’s commitment to education. We are pleased to give students, faculty members, parents and siblings the opportunity to cheer for their favorite team for the tenth year in a row on The Long Island Challenge,” said Trent Anderson, Cablevision’s Vice President of Education.
The academic quiz show challenges the four-member teams, and one alternate, with increasingly difficult questions during the half-hour competition. The show is divided into three rounds that include multiple-choice questions, a lightning round, where teams try to answer 10 questions in 60 seconds, and a final round where teams can answer questions freely, but risk losing 10 points for incorrect answers.
Continuing each week through June 2007 the show shines the spotlight on the students’ academic skills as they compete in categories that will test their knowledge of history, science, math, arts and literature and pop culture, for their school’s share of $22,500 in prizes.
Representing Newfield High School will be team members: Taylor LiCausi – Captain, Rebecca Lee, Alexandra Iannolo, Kevin Bean, and alternate William Ng. The team’s academic advisor(s) is Aaron Factor.
The Long Island tournament will conclude after a series of elimination rounds with a televised showdown between the best team from Suffolk County and the best team from Nassau County—followed by the first of its kind tri-state Challenge Championship among the champions from Connecticut, New Jersey and Long Island during spring 2007. The one remaining high school team will be crowned the Challenge Champion.
The Challenge has been growing in popularity on Long Island where it originated ten years ago and is now enjoying its second season in New Jersey and its inaugural year in Connecticut. More information on The Challenge, including standings, statistics and short contestant bios, will be available on www.powertolearn.com as the tournament progresses.
The Long Island Challenge is sponsored by Chevyoffers.com, Cablevision’s Power to Learn and Cablevision’s News 12 Long Island.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Long Island, NY (December 22nd 2006) It was announced today that Long Island’s own Iridesense has signed a record deal with Long Island’s own Paradiddle Records. Earlier this year Iridesense appeared on the Paradiddle Records “Bob Dylan Uncovered” album, contributing their take on “One More Cup Of Coffee (The Valley Below)” and more recently they recorded a cover of “Do They Know It’s Christmas” for the Paradiddle Holiday Album. The band and label had such a great time recording these tracks together they decided to join forces and put together a brand new album of original Iridesense tracks, tentitively slated for a Spring 07 release.
ABOUT IRIDESENSE
http://www.iridesense.com
Iridesense is one of the area’s most well known and respected bands, and with good reason: they were recently a semi finalist in the Shift 2 Nissan Battle of the Bands, their music can currently be heard on Nickelodeon in the shows Zoe 101 (featuring Jaime Lynn Spears - sister to Britney) and Drake & Josh and will be featured on next years roster of MTV shows such as Pimp My Ride, Room Raiders, NEXT and more! They also recently signed licensing deals with the Pump Audio and Song and Film agencies, and will be hitting the small and big screen much more in 07′ They’re currently in pre production on our new CD to be released on Paradiddle Records, their third full length to be released in the Spring (2007). Their 1997 release “Cool Dream Tomorrow” on Rock Diva records, and 2003 release “Iridesense” on LLJ Records were well recieved by both critics and fans, and this new album will surely be no exception. This past year (2006) was a busy one for the band with regular dates in NYC, and all over Long Island including their monthly songwriter series at The Conklin Barn and headlining shows at the outdoor Chapin Rainbow Theatre in Huntington, Long Island. They also played a performance for the nationwide Verizon FiOs Festival (which had a corresponding web video contest online for the song “Gasoline”). The band was a featured performer for Fleet Week at Central Park Summerstage in NYC, and their most recent history has brought them several TV and radio appearances in support of their Summer-Fall (2006) east coast tour including a taping of an episode of the MTV show “Boiling Points”. They were also chosen as a Sponsored band by Sam Ash Music Stores. In (2004) they played for 13,000 sports fans as between period entertainment at a New York Islanders NHL game, then played a sold out engagement with Something Corporate and another with Gin Blossoms. They were also semi finalists (top 20 out of 1000’s of entries nationwide) in the National “Be A Radio Star” Competition where they recieved airplay in rotation at Z100 radio in NY in addition to a nationally broadcast radio interview with Elvis Duran from the Z Morning Zoo and Actress Amanda Bynes. They were prominently displayed on Newsday.com’s Impulse nightlife section as the subject of a skit with the comedy series The Slack Pack, and finished a LIVE DVD EPK concert video at Streamring Networks of their hit song “Gasoline”.

LIPA Issues a Request for Proposals to Develop a 5 Megawatt Fuel Cell
Cogeneration Project
The First of its Kind in the Nation
Hicksville, NY-December 15, 2006- Long Island Power Authority Chairman, Richard M. Kessel and KeySpan Corporation Chairman & CEO, Robert B. Catell today announced the issuance of a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the construction and operation of a fuel cell cogeneration project capable of producing 5 megawatts (MW) of electricity, enough to power
about 5,000 homes. This project would be the first of its kind in the nation and may, when completed, be the largest commercial fuel cell system in the world.
As part of LIPA’s overall Energy Plan for Long Island, and in conjunction with KeySpan’s commitment to renewable energy technologies, the two companies are interested in receiving proposals for a fuel cell cogeneration project that will provide up to a nominal five (5) megawatts of electricity, with the primary objective of increasing the
amount of power LIPA obtains from renewable resources. The proposed new fuel cell will open a new phase in improving regional air quality. A fuel cell project of this size will also help Long Island meet the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) goal that has been set by New York State for the utilization of green energy technologies that are
environmentally friendly. “LIPA and KeySpan are taking the next step towards advancing the development of fuel cell technology,” said LIPA Chairman Richard M. Kessel. “Utilizing the cogeneration capability of fuel cells for
generating large amounts of electricity for distribution through LIPA’s power grid in addition to generating economical thermal energy will allow us to harness new power supply resources that are environmentally benign.”
The thermal energy produced by the fuel cell will be sold by LIPA to KeySpan Energy Delivery Long Island (KEDLI) and will be used by KEDLI in place of thermal energy provided by standard heaters to warm natural gas as required by its normal gas distribution practices.
“For almost 40 years KeySpan has been working hard to help develop fuel cell technology,” said KeySpan Chairman and CEO Robert B. Catell. “It is very exciting for us that this new partnership may show that the technology is ready to serve our region with very clean energy.”
“Fuel cells are such an exciting technology because they can produce electricity with much reduced or even zero greenhouse gas emissions and virtually none of the air pollutants that cause smog and health problems,” said Gordian Raacke, Executive Director of Renewable Energy Long Island (RELI), a not-for-profit organization promoting clean,
sustainable energy use and generation on the Island. “With projects like this, Long Island can become an example of how our nation can begin the switch to clean, renewable and climate-friendly power sources.”
Much like a battery, fuel cells function through a single electrochemical process. A fuel cell produces electricity, water, and heat using fuel and oxygen in the air. Water is the only byproduct when hydrogen is the fuel. As hydrogen flows into the fuel cell on the anode side, a catalyst facilitates the separation of the hydrogen gas into electrons and protons (hydrogen ions). The result is a “battery” that never runs down and a very clean source of electricity.
Highlights of the RFP:
Proposers must commit, in their respective proposals, to develop a fuel cell cogeneration project at the Designated Site rated at between 2 MW and 5 MW net electrical output and sell all products from this facility to LIPA under the terms and conditions of a PPA. The proposed project shall meet each of the following requirements:
* Designated Site: The cogeneration facility will be installed and operated on an undeveloped piece of property on Park Place in the City of Long Beach, Nassau County NY. The fuel cell system will deliver energy to the adjacent LIPA substation and will deliver thermal energy to the natural gas gate station owned and operated by KEDLI on the same
property.
* Commercial Operation Date: Within one (1) year of the effective date of the PPA, which is the date that the PPA is approved by the Comptroller of the State of New York as explained in Section XVI-Contract Approval of the RFP.
* Electric Distribution: The facility shall be interconnected with LIPA’s electric distribution system at 13 kV.
* Permitting: The project shall be in compliance with all applicable federal, state and local permitting requirements.
Fuel cell technology has been part of LIPA’s Clean Energy Initiative (CEI). The CEI is a 10-year, $355-million commitment to promote clean, renewable electric generation technologies, energy conservation and efficiency.
“This is a very exciting and historic project,” said Mr. Kessel. “With each alternative or renewable energy project we advance, we take another step away from our over dependence on fossil fuel burning technologies. Future generations as well as our environment will be the beneficiaries.”
LIPA, a non-profit municipal electric utility, owns the retail electric business on Long Island and provides electric service to more than 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. LIPA does not own any electric generation assets on Long Island and it does not provide natural gas service.

“Profusion Announces “In Love and Friendship”
“TENACITY TRIUMPHING OVER TRAUMA” ISBN#1-59899-063-2
(West Hempstead, NY) They say that in the end, all that really matters is the connection and relationships people share. Long Island native Valentina Janek affirms this belief in her new book about tenacity triumphing over trauma, In Love and Friendship.
This true story illustrates how a medical catastrophe created an inseparable bond between two ordinary middle-aged women and the Long Island community. Both Janek and her best friend Gerri Harkins worked together to help Nicole, a 7-year-old who nearly drowned but was brought back to life by emergency medical technicians. The young girl suffered severe brain damage that prevented her from walking or talking; she has to undergo frequent hyperbaric treatments. A story of courage, hope and survival, In Love and Friendship details Nicole’s recovery and how the author and her friend raised funds for Nicole’s costly medical bills. Janek and Harkins co-founded Hope for Nicole.
“I believe anything is possible through love and friendship,” she said. Taking the time to write the story of this triangle friendship has empowered Janek with the strength and inspiration to realize that when one door closes, another one opens. In Love and Friendship is a true human interest story that touches the heart. “Support is very important during times of illness and catastrophe,” Janek said, “and friendship, family and community love will get you through.” People who have experienced illness, need hope, courage and support to get through a catastrophe or those who want to read about love and friendship and where they can take you will enjoy this book, men and women alike.
Janek is an accomplished business consultant and community activist on Long Island residing in West Hempstead. She has been recognized in the media as an extraordinaire “Woman of Distinction” Par Excellence and Pearl Honoree in the Regional Project Legacy Program. Janek has held positions in the business, technology and publishing world. She credits her old-fashioned Italian family for teaching her the values of working hard and treating people with respect and honesty. She works on numerous community and charitable boards in the New York area, advocating for support and volunteerism. She sums up her philosophy by saying, “Volunteerism is good for your business, your career and your soul.”

LIPA Completes 2006 Plan of Finance Refinancing $2.2 Billion of Long Term Debt
Aggregate Refinancings Will Produce Savings of $115 Million
Uniondale, NY - December 14, 2006 - Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Chairman Richard M. Kessel announced today that a just completed bond offering, together with three prior refinancings this year, will save the Authority $115 million in debt service on a net present value basis because of the extremely favorable rates that LIPA’s bonds received from
the market. These savings will be used to hold down LIPA’s costs and help stabilize electric bills at their new lower rate through next year.
“Favorable bond market conditions, together with LIPA’s improved credit quality have allowed LIPA to capture these savings for our customers” said Mr. Kessel. “We’re extremely pleased with the confidence the bond market has placed in LIPA’s long-term bonds. It demonstrates that LIPA is financially sound, and lowering our debt service by $115 million will provide customer savings over both the short and long term.”
LIPA expects to close on the final leg of its 2006 Plan of Finance, a $518 million offering of General Revenue Bonds, on December 20, 2006. The Series 2006F Bonds will advance refund bonds issued by LIPA in 1998, 2001 and 2003. The Series 2006F Bonds will produce net present value debt service savings of $28.5 million. When priced on December 7, 2006 the financial market responded favorably to LIPA’s bond offering by setting an average yield of 4.19% with an average life of 12.3 years.
In three separate transactions earlier this year LIPA issued its Series 2006A, 2006D, and 2006E Bonds in an aggregate principle amount of $1.7 billion to advance refund bonds issued by LIPA in 1998, 2001 and 2003. These advance refundings produced aggregate debt service savings of $86.6 million on a net present value basis.
For the bond offerings, Bear Stearns & Company served as Financial Advisor; Hawkins, Delafield and Wood LLP served as Bond Counsel; and Clifford Chance US LLP served as Disclosure Counsel.
LIPA’s senior manager group of Citigroup, Goldman, Sachs & Co., Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley and UBS Investment Bank lead a group of 12 financial institutions that placed LIPA’s bonds with investors.
LIPA, a non-profit municipal electric utility, owns the retail electric Transmission and Distribution System on Long Island and provides electric service to over 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. In terms of customers served, LIPA is the 3rd largest municipal electric utility in the nation and the 6th largest in terms of electricity delivered. ABOUT GLASSJAW:
Long Island, NY-based progressive hardcore band Glassjaw was formed by singer Daryl Palumbo and guitarist Justin Beck, longtime friends who began collaborating as teens. Roster changes regularly plagued the group during its formative years, with guitarist Todd N. Weinstock, bassist Manuel Carrero, and drummer Sammy Siegler completing the lineup for Glassjaw’s 2000 debut album, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence. Siegler was replaced by ex-Orange 9MM drummer Larry Gorman for the band’s summer tour in support of the Deftones. Carrero was also replaced by Dave Allen. Two years later, Glassjaw inked a deal with Warner Bros. and issued Worship and Tribute in July 2002. The band saw more membership changes in late 2004 when Weinstock left to pursue his own band — Men, Women and Children, and Manuel Carrero rejoined in place of Allen. Singer Daryl Palumbo’s side project, Head Automatica, also took Gorman away, Durijah Lang coming on in his place. After a two-year hiatus, Glassjaw played three shows in 2005. - Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

LIPA Provides Green Choice Incentives for Municipalities
Southampton, N.Y. - December 7, 2006 - Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Chairman Richard M. Kessel today announced a program to provide an incentive to Long Island municipalities that participate in its Green Choice program. LIPA’s Green Choice program is designed to promote the development and use of renewable energy technologies within New York
State and was modeled on the State’s program.
Municipalities participating in LIPA’s Green Choice program, plus those considering enrolling, are making contractual commitments for large amounts of Green Choice attributes. Since municipalities serve a taxpaying constituent base, LIPA has structured the incentive as a way to lessen the financial outlay that must eventually be absorbed in
municipal budgets and paid for by taxpayers. Residential customers, on the other hand, do not have to enter into contracts, and can either elect to participate in the Green Choice program directly or can consider themselves as supporters of the Green Choice concept since their local municipality is a program participant.
“We’re seeking to provide an equitable way of lowering the financial burden carried by those municipalities that participate in the Green Choice program on a long-term contractual basis with Energy Supply Companies (ESCOs) while helping to stimulate the development of renewable energy technologies that will lessen Long Island’s and New
York state’s dependence on fossil fuel-generated electricity,” said LIPA Chairman Richard M. Kessel.
“The Green Choice incentive is a welcome adjustment to a very valuable program,” Southampton Town Supervisor Patrick Heaney. “The Town of Southampton has long supported renewable energy programs and I commend Mr. Kessel for moving ahead with this newest incentive initiative.”
“The more financially attractive LIPA makes its Green Choice Program, the more relevant reusable energy will be in Long Island’s future. This is a step forward,” said Supervisor Philip Cardinale, Town of Riverhead.
LIPA’s municipal incentive will provide up to 1 cent per kilowatt hour for 50% of the actual Green Attributes payments, up to a maximum of $30,000 to participating municipalities. The incentive is designed to reward municipalities that are currently participating in the program and attract new participants. A total of $300,000 has been set aside
annually for the program for a three-year period and the incentives will be retroactive to January 2006.
Mr. Kessel said that LIPA would develop a Green Choice incentive program for residential customers, and would present a plan to the LIPA Board in early 2007.
LIPA, a non-profit municipal electric utility, owns the retail electric Transmission and Distribution System on Long Island and provides electric service to over 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. In term of customers served, LIPA is the 3rd largest municipal electric utility in the nation
and is the 6th largest in terms of electricity delivered. LIPA does not provide natural gas service or own any on-island generation assets.
