RJD2 - The Third Hand out March 6th 2007 on XL Recordings
Its 2007, and as usual, popular music finds itself stagnant. A cadre of important records slated to change the game forever join queue alongside a frequently replenished fresh faced roster of newcomers poised to champion new sounds and take their spoils. Purists in each camp decry the newcomers, citing the respective death of each genre and yearning for the days of yore, when records were judged by their innate qualities alone and not the amount of blog buzz garnered on the hot new band of the day. What’s to be done about the current state of things? Don’t ask RJ. He’s been in the basement.
Before delving into “The Third Hand,” its important to note the many accolades attached to RJ. Catapulted to notoriety, fame, and uber-serious hip-hop credibility with 2002’s Dead Ringer LP, 30-year-old Philadelphia resident and multi-instrumentalist RJD2 has enjoyed a thoroughly prolific career, following that debut album with 2004’s critically acclaimed Since We Last Spoke. In the last year alone, RJ produced records for his group Soul Position and Aceyalone, wrote scores for video games and DVDs, in addition to various remixes for artists such as Astrud Gilberto.
For The Third Hand, RJD2 seemingly abandons all the notions and titles that have been placed upon him over the past six years. Underground hip-hop super-producer to many, virtuoso sample-based instrumental wizard to some, RJD2 embodies all of these things on “The Third Hand” but placates none who seek more of the same. Recorded, performed, arranged, and produced entirely himself in his basement studio, RJD2 commands his trusty MPC 2000XL sampler/sequencer alongside a pantheon of analog synths, electric pianos and guitars, not to mention his own voice. Most notably, live instruments come in to play – RJ adds another dimension to his music, no longer satisfied with recording directly off of a sampler.
The result is a cohesive pop album in the most classic sense, a sound more akin to Phoenix than, say, Prefuse 73. In essence, this is RJD2’s entrance into the pantheon of enigmatic songwriter/producers (see Jon Brion, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder) capable of creating a record so full of rich songwriting, complex arrangement, and clever production that they transcend genre distinction and warrant an intent listen every time. The current state of music? As long as RJD2 keeps refining the sound of today with records like The Third Hand , we should be just fine.

Uniondale–February 14, 2007-2:30PM — The St. Valentines Day Winter Storm of 2007 is not showing any love for Long Island with its snow, sleet, ice and high winds. In response to storm-related outages, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) has extra crews working 16-hour shifts to restore service to customers as quickly as possible.
Since midnight through 2:30PM, some 39,000 LIPA customers have been affected by the winter weather system with 27,000 restored so far. The peak number of customers out at one time (21,900) occurred at 11 AM today. 700 personnel have been working on extended shifts replacing poles, repairing power lines, removing trees from LIPA facilities, and
replacing fuses and resetting transformers, and coordinating the storm response.
Additional restoration crews will be working extended shifts through the evening and over night to make repairs.
“This winter storm has a bit of a bite to it, because of the ice and high winds,” said LIPA CEO and President Richard M. Kessel. “And we anticipate that we will experience more outages as the storm works its way past Long Island, because of the high sustained winds and wind gusts, and potential icing.
“We certainly owe a debt of gratitude and a thank you to the men and women of our restoration crews who are working in such horrible conditions to get the lights and heat back on in homes and businesses island-wide as quickly as possible,” said Mr. Kessel.
LIPA customers can visit LIPA’s Storm Center on its Web site at www.lipower.org for real-time outage reports, weather updates, and tips to stay prepared for weather emergencies.
To report an outage or downed wire call 1-800-490-0075.

Monitoring for Ice Build Up on Power Lines
High Sustained Winds & Wind Gusts Predicted
Extra Crews Available to Make Repairs
Call 1-800-490-0075 to Report Downed Power Lines
Uniondale, NY - February 14, 2007 - 11:00AM — With the National Weather Service issuing an Ice Storm Warning and Wind Advisory for Nassau and Suffolk counties as of 10AM this morning, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) is closely monitoring the potential for ice build up on its power lines and has been restoring weather-related outages across
Long Island.
LIPA has extra repair and tree trim crews, logistical personnel and system managers, and call center personnel working extended shifts to restore power and respond to customer calls.
“We’ve been keeping up with the storm-related outages,” said LIPA CEO and President Richard M. Kessel. “We are anticipating the potential for an increased number of outages as the storm continues to progress across
Long Island, especially with the high probability for wind-related outages as the sustained winds and wind gusts intensify. As a result, we currently have about 700 personnel devoted to restoring power as quickly as possible, but the high wind gusts could make restoration efforts very difficult at times.”
“Play it safe,” said Mr. Kessel. “Don’t go near any - let me underscore any - downed lines. You can never be sure if it’s a power line, phone line or cable TV line. But it could be energized by coming in contact with a power line.”
LIPA customers can call 1-800-490-0075 to report an outage or downed line. For LIPA’s real-time storm outage reports, storm preparedness information, and links to weather sites and emergency response agencies go to: www.lipower.org/stormcenter.

East End Volleyball Leagues Accepting Teams for 2007 Season
East End Volleyball’s League Program on Long Island is now accepting teams for its 23rd summer season. Leagues start May 29 and continue through Aug. 29. Five separate divisions are offered for players of all levels from novice to very skilled. The recreational coed 6-player division is for novice players who are out for a fun night on the beach in a loosely refereed game. The competitive coed 6-player division ups the ante a little with all teams understanding the basic strategies of beach volleyball. Teams will all use 3 hits to set up the spiker and have very good ball control and knowledge of the game.
The 4-player division is for players who have stronger ball control skills and can cover more of the court than coed 6s players. The next step up is the coed triples division which is the highest level in EEVB’s league program. The top triples players all play weekend tournaments in Open and AA divisions and create a very competitive yet fun environment in this league designed for very skilled players.
EEVB’s doubles league is entering it’s 2nd season which ranges from intermediate to very skilled players. The goal of this league is to develop players for weekend tournaments. Teams will be mixed up regardless of their division during the regular season schedule. As teams win each week they will move up to a stronger court. As teams lose, they drop down. This format lets players find their own level while always playing competitive games. Teams will separate at the end of the season for playoffs.
Fees for the league are approximately $75/player for the 12 week season. Further info is available online at www.eevb.net/leagues.htm. Single players can find a team through the EEVB web site bulletin board. There are many players listed there right now looking to join teams.
All EEVB leagues and tournaments are sanctioned by AVPNext, the official grass roots organization of the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. Wilson Volleyball is the official ball of AVPNext and EEVB. Additional sponsors are Spirit Airlines; Native Eyewear, Venus Swimwear, Iron Horse Bikes, Atlantic City Convention & Visitor’s Authority, VolleyChick, Vincere Sand Socks, Spike Nashbar, Sweet Tomatoes, Rider Sandals, Park & Sun net systems, Dig Magazine, 6 Flags Great Adventure/Hurricane Harbor, Down River Outfitters, Volleyball Magazine, Sportime.

LIPA Ready for Winter Storm
Extra Repair Crews Available to Respond
Call 1-800-490-0075 to Report Downed Power Lines
Uniondale, NY-February 13, 2007-Long Island is bracing for the first winter storm of the season. Snow is expected to fall across Long Island starting Tuesday night, followed by a mix of snow, freezing rain or sleet and high winds into Wednesday. As a result, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) is anticipating the potential for electric outages
across Long Island.
LIPA has been monitoring the storm forecasts closely and is prepared to respond with extra repair crews and call center personnel working extended shifts as necessary to restore power.
“We’re monitoring the progress of this storm and have been making pre-storm preparations,” said LIPA CEO and President Richard M. Kessel. “We will have extra repair personnel available to respond to any outages that may be caused by the wet snow, high winds and possible icy conditions.”
Mr. Kessel noted that wet snow, high winds and possible ice can cause weakened trees and tree limbs to fall bringing down power lines and causing outages. Storm-related vehicular accidents can cause outages when cars and trucks skid off local roads and hit utility poles.
“Play it safe,” said Mr. Kessel. “Don’t go near any - let me underscore any - downed lines. You can never be sure if it’s a power line, phone line or cable TV line. But it could be energized by coming in contact with a power line.
”Call LIPA at 1-800-490-0075 to report an outage or downed line and we’ll get a repair crew out as quickly as possible to make repairs,” Mr. Kessel said.
LIPA encourages customers to prepare for the possibility of a power outage by taking the following actions now:
* Have a battery-powered radio or TV available;
* Have flashlights and extra batteries readily accessible for all family
members;
* Have a supply of canned food with a manual can opener available;
* If you have an electric water pump, keep spare containers of water for cooking and washing;
* Keep a non-electronic phone in your home - phone lines often remain operational even during power outages;
* If you decide to use a standby generator, have it installed by a licensed electrician and never operate it inside your garage or home;
* If an outage occurs, disconnect appliances and sensitive electronic equipment to prevent any possible damage that could be caused by momentary power spike that could occur when service is restored.
For additional storm preparedness information, links to weather sites and emergency response agencies, and LIPA’s real-time storm outage reports go to www.lipower.org.
