3rd Annual Long Island Lighthouse Challenge

Suffolk County, New York, May 7th, 2007 – The 3rd Annual Long Island Lighthouse Challenge will be held Saturday, May 19th through Sunday, May 20th, 2007.
This annual event challenges participants to visit 9 lighthouse sites and the East End Seaport Museum, during the weekend.Participants will receive a souvenir at each site and will also receive a special commemorative souvenir upon completion of the challenge. All of the stops are located in Suffolk County, which in honor of it’s having more lighthouses than any other county in the nation, has adopted the name “America’s Lighthouse County.â€
The event will also feature a raffle with fantastic prizes. Participants will be able to climb some lighthouses, take a boat ride to an offshore lighthouse, see offshore lights from land, view rare artifacts, witness preservation projects, learn about local maritime history and meet historians, preservationists and former lighthouse keepers.
The Lighthouse Challenge weekend also includes a lighthouse cruise on Friday evening, May 18th and Saturday evening May 19th departing at 4:30 pm from the Greenport railroad dock. The cruises will be narrated by local historian and preservationist Bob Muller.

The Long Island Lighthouse Challenge is the result of a cooperative effort of all Long Island’s historic lighthouse preservation and education groups, with the help of many government agencies, corporate supporters, volunteers and friends at the New Jersey Lighthouse Society and Chesapeake Chapter of the US Lighthouse Society. The Lighthouse Challenge will raise funds for lighthouse preservation and education on Long Island.
