LIPA & United Way Host LI’s First ENERGY STAR(r) Affordable Housing Conference
Uniondale, NY - May 15, 2007 - Two prevalent topics on Long Island are the high cost of living and energy efficiency. Understanding how these important concepts can be addressed is why the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), United Way of Long Island, community groups and building trades are teaming up to host Long Island’s first ever ENERGY STAR(r) for Affordable Housing Conference 2007 on May 23.
The day-long seminar at the Sheraton Long Island Hotel, 110 Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, Smithtown, New York will focus on making affordable housing more energy efficient through LIPA’s New York ENERGY STAR(r)-Labeled Homes Program.
ENERGY STAR(r)-labeled homes use about 30 percent less energy than conventionally built new homes. Using energy wisely goes a long way toward preserving natural resources and improving air quality. These homes achieve the savings with improved air sealing and insulation techniques, high quality windows and doors, high efficiency heating and cooling systems, well-sealed duct systems and ENERGY STAR(r)-qualified appliances and lighting. In 2008, ENERGY STAR(r)-labeled home standards will become a building code requirement in many towns on Long Island.
The seminar will include special guest speaker, John Tooley, nationally renowned building expert who will discuss the “house as a system” approach to maintain long-term affordability, value and durability in residential new construction.
Affordable housing agencies, community development organizations and local housing authorities; as well as architects, builders and housing program managers who want to attend the conference should call Janie Prinivalli or Kristen Anderson at 631-940-3721. To register online, visit www.unitedwayli.org and click the “Building Homes with ENERGY STAR(r)” link under the Events Calendar. The cost for registration is $35 per person, which includes lunch. The hours of the seminar are 8:30a.m. to 4:45 p.m., registration sign-in starting at 7:15a.m.
The affordable Housing Conference is sponsored by LIPA and United Way of Long Island, as well as the Long Island Builders Institute, Neighborhood Network, CDC Long Island and Long Island housing Partnership. For more information about the conference and the New York ENERGY STAR-Labeled Homes program visit www.lipower.org/cei or call 1-877-ESTAR-LI (877-378-2754).

East End Arts Council Partners with Jamesport Manor
Riverhead, NY—(May 14, 2007) In a new partnership with the Jamesport Manor, the East End Arts Council is exhibiting the work of its members at the Rosalie Dimon Gallery, named for the Peruvian lady of the Manor during the last years of its inhabitance by the Dimon family. The gallery is ensconced on the light-filled second floor of the Manor, and is every inch the 19th-Century salon. Restored to its original 1820’s architectural grandeur after the tragic fire of 2005, the Jamesport Manor, located on Manor lane in Jamesport, is now home to a world-class restaurant in addition to this new gallery space.
“It is a thrill to be connected with the Jamesport Manor,” said Pat Snyder, executive director of the EEAC. “The board of directors and I welcome this opportunity in behalf of our artist members.”
The Rosalie Dimon Gallery will host the works of EEAC artists, starting with Max Moran and Michael Killelea, whose work is now on display. Mr. Moran, a prominent east end artist and former resident of Manor Lane, actually painted some of his canvasses from the porch of the Manor. He is showing oils that depict landscapes of the local area. Mr. Killelea, a well-known painter who has published several books on the North Fork, shows a range of his watercolors of the region. “It’s exciting to be part of a place that’s so filled with life,” said Mr. Killelea of the Manor.
Steeped in rich lore and local color, the stories of the Jamesport Manor’s Dimon family include sea-faring clipper-ships (like the famous Sea Witch), fortunes made in South American (Rosalie was Peruvian nobility), soldiers, gold-rush adventurers, scandals and elopements. “It seems only fitting that the house be restored to its original state and filled with beautiful art of its surrounding area,” said Ms. Snyder. “It’s really a tribute to the history of the town.”
The Jamesport Manor is now open for dinner, serving “new American cuisine with a mediterranean flair,” but art and history lovers may browse the Rosalie Dimon gallery starting at 3:00 PM, seven days a week.
For more information on the Jamesport Manor or for dinner reservations, see www.jamesportmanorinn.com, or call 631-722-0500. ABOUT THE WHITE HOUSE
In 1750, Jeremiah Culver built the Canoe Place Inn in Hampton Bays, which was called “Good Ground” until 1922, according to “Old Canoe Place Inn” by Helen Penny Walter. The inn was named for the place where Indians left their canoes when hunting. After Julius Keller, the owner of Maxims in Manhattan, bought the inn in 1917, it became popular with celebrities like actors Helen Hayes and Cary Grant and boxer John L. Sullivan. New York State Governor Alfred E. Smith, who spent 30 summers in the area, and other politicians helped earn the inn the nickname “Tammany Hall of the East.” While fire destroyed it in 1921, it was soon rebuilt. The 30,000-square-foot Canoe Place Inn, or CPI, was Long Island’s largest nightclub, and hosted performers like Bad Company, Joan Jett and Bon Jovi. CPI was recently put up for sale, and so it is that THE WHITE HOUSE was born. Now, with the current owners at the helm, the reemergence of a legendary landmark is all but certain.

Propose Moratorium and Safeguards to Protect Victims of Predatory Lending
Albany—More than 20-percent of the sub-prime mortgage loans that originated in 2005 will end in foreclosure, jeopardizing the homes of more than 28,000 New York families, according to a report unveiled today by the State Senate Democratic Conference. The report shows that sub-prime foreclosure rates in Nassau-Suffolk County (22-percent) and the NYC-White Plains area (21.7-percent) would place both areas among the top 20 cities in the United States. Upstate cities like Ithaca (17.8-percent), Buffalo-Niagara Falls (15.6-percent) and Albany (17.4-percent) indicate that this is a statewide problem.
Alarmed by the growing number of foreclosures across New York State, and stunned by the accounts of New Yorkers who are on the verge of losing their homes, Senate Democrats announced the Predatory Lending Mitigation Program which will help families that have been victimized by predatory lenders. They were joined at the announcement by David Collymore, Vice President of Amalgamated Bank and Bruce Beaudette, President and CEO of Sunmark Federal Credit Union.
Senate Democratic Leader Malcolm A. Smith (D-Queens) said, “if we don’t work together to find a solution today, the foreclosure crisis will have a devastating effect on our communities and families as well as the banking industry itself.” Smith said the measures proposed are part of the Senate Democrats “9 to 5 Agenda” designed to aid and protect the working families of New York State.
Sub-prime loans are offered to individuals whose credit history prevents them from securing a low-rate loan. A typical sub-prime borrowers has a low credit score and a history of late payments, charge-offs, or bankruptcies. Since they are considered at high-risk of default, they receive less-than-favorable terms, including high interest rates, regular fees or an upfront charge. Borrowers are often enticed by low introductory rates that are then raised significantly within a few years making much more difficult, if not impossible, to keep up with monthly payments.
The report shows that African-American and Latino borrowers are far more likely to pay more for their mortgages than other borrowers.
The Democratic Senators proposed several measures that will protect consumers from predatory lending practices. And, in an effort to help borrowers who have already been victimized by questionable, and perhaps unethical, lending practices, the Senators called for an immediate voluntary six-month moratorium on foreclosures of sub-prime loans in New York.
Senator Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) said the moratorium, combined with a planned series of public hearings, “would allow an opportunity to hear from the banking industry and from victims of predatory lending and hopefully provide sufficient time to devise a solution that helps victims without hurting ethical lenders.”
The public hearings will be chaired by Senator Martin Connor, the ranking Democrat on the Senate’s Banking Committee. Connor said he would be holding hearings in each region of the State in order to gauge the full magnitude of the problem. “The more information we have available, the greater our chances of addressing and solving this crisis.”
The Senate Democrats also proposed measures to help consumers avoid the pitfalls of predatory loans. One bill, sponsored by Senator Smith, would bar the State from doing business with banks that partake in predatory lending practices.
“Predatory loans are unethical. Targeting people who are naïve in order to rob them of their dreams is unconscionable, and New York State should not be doing business with banks that engage in such practices,” Smith concluded.
