LIPA and Town of Hempstead to kick-off “Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® Program”
Uniondale, NY - September 19, 2007 - Long Islanders now have the opportunity to save money and help the environment by utilizing LIPA’s Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program. The Home Performance program offers residential customers an opportunity to improve overall energy efficiency, comfort and safety, with features such as special cash incentives, Comprehensive Home Assessments and FREE public education seminars. The program can help save up to 40% on energy costs.
To educate its customers, LIPA is kicking off its consumer education campaign with a FREE seminar for the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program. It will be held in the Pavilion at Hempstead Town Hall, One Washington Street in Hempstead on Thursday, September 27, 2007 at 7:00 pm.
The seminar will be hosted by LIPA CEO Richard M. Kessel, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray and Renewable Energy Long Island (RELI) Executive Director Gordian Raacke. Homeowners are invited to learn how they can obtain a Comprehensive Home Assessment by an accredited Building Performance Institute (BPI) contractor, and implement cost effective measures for improving their home’s overall energy efficiency.
“Changing just five light fixtures to ENERGY STAR fixtures can save the typical electric consumer $60 a year or by replacing old light bulbs with Compact Fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) you use 75% less electricity,” said LIPA CEO/President Richard M. Kessel. “These are the kinds of savings and facts consumers can learn at LIPA’s Home Performance with ENERGY STAR seminars. With the cost of oil rising, it is important to know what energy efficiency improvements will help keep home energy costs down.”
“I am very pleased that Hempstead Town will be hosting the first Home Performance Seminar in our area with LIPA,” said Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray. “This is a great opportunity for residents to learn how to increase their health, safety and comfort in their homes while reducing electricity consumption and protecting the environment. The town is glad to provide residents with information enabling them to cut back on energy costs and reduce environmental damage while maintaining a high quality of life,” stated Murray.
“Supervisor Kate Murray must be commended for hosting the first home energy efficiency seminar on Long Island and I look forward to working with the Town of Hempstead and its residents to help people save energy and money while reducing harmful emissions from our homes,” said Gordian Raacke, executive director of Renewable Energy Long Island (RELI), a not-for-profit organization. “We may not realize it, but our homes are often poorly insulated and use antiquated or needlessly wasteful heating and air conditioning systems, appliances and lighting. Thanks to LIPA’s new Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program, homeowners can now get help from specially trained home energy experts and find out how much money they can save by making energy efficiency improvements.”
For improvement measures-that directly result in electric savings- totaling $2,500 or more, a $500 cash back offer on Energy Efficient Home Improvements through LIPA’s Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program is available. As an extra incentive, the limited time cash back offer has now been extended to February 1, 2008, for work completed by an approved BPI certified contractor. In addition, to help eligible homeowners get the work done faster, low interest financing or 10% cash-back is also available.
The time has never been better to maximize your home’s performance for greater energy and environmental savings. For more information on LIPA’s Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program and to sign up for this and other FREE public seminars in your area, please call 1-877-ESTAR-LI (378-2754) or visit www.lipower.org/cei/homeperformance.html today. Make your home an ENERGY STAR.

The Mineola School District chose Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess SafeGuard to efficiently protect faculty and student information
Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced the successful deployment of its new OmniAccess SafeGuard security solution by the Mineola Union Free School District of Mineola, New York. Concerned about potential security risks to its computer records and communications network, Mineola selected the OmniAccess SafeGuard as the most cost-effective, feature-rich security solution to meet its needs.
Alcatel-Lucent’s OmniAccess SafeGuard, based on award-winning technology from ConSentry Networks, allows the Mineola School District to protect confidentiality of internal resources using policy-based access control,
restricting access to particular information only to its set of authorized users. The level of access allowed to guest computers on campus is also controlled, and access to particular websites can be blocked campus-wide. In addition, the School District is better positioned to comply with new regulations such as FERPA (Family and
Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and CALEA (Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act).
Alcatel-Lucent’s OmniAccess SafeGuard addresses key IT requirements such as network admission control (NAC), guest access, identity based network access and malware control, and since it is an overlay solution, OmniAccess SafeGuard causes minimal disruption and modification of existing infrastructure.
“The OmniAccess SafeGuard gives our district greater auditing capability to track ‘who did what’ and protect from unauthorized access,” said Dr. Michael Nagler, Deputy Superintendent at Mineola. “We found that the
Alcatel-Lucent solution was easier to implement and manage, was more robust in its reporting capabilities and offered a better overall value. Plus, it was compatible with our existing infrastructure. We avoided any
unnecessary major network upgrades.”
“School districts realize the need to protect the confidentiality of student, faculty and administrative records while supporting the real-time communications that encourage creative learning,” added Tom Burns, president of Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Solution activities. “Protecting critical information has become increasingly complex, and the OmniAccess SafeGuard allows IT departments to stay ahead of the daily security threats to their network. We are pleased that Mineola School District has selected Alcatel-Lucent for its network security.”

(Long Island NY) - Sayville has a rich legacy by way of gay history: It’s even been reported that Oscar Wilde spent time here as the house guest of Robert Roosevelt at his mansion north of Middle Road. On your way to The Bunk House these days, you’re more likely to run into one of the Fab Five or even the legendary Harvey Fierstein, en-route to Cherry Grove. The Bunk House is one of the most exciting clubs on the Island, with everything from country and western nights and go-go dancing, to Tuesday movie night. This is the sort of watering hole where before long you’ll be part of the family — and the family grows, especially in summer when the place cranks with the Fire Island set.

SAND, SURF, AND THE SPECIAL SAUCE: SURFRIDER FOUNDATION’S ANNUAL PASTA JAM
Babylon, New York: September 23, 2007- Surfrider Foundation’s Central Long Island Chapter, in conjunction with the American Littoral Society’s 22 nd Annual International Coastal Cleanup, will be hosting their Annual Pasta Jam at Cedar Beach in Babylon on Sunday, September 23, 2007 at 1 p.m.
The Surfrider Foundation is an international non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans and beaches through activism, research, and education. Surfrider’s Central Long Island Chapter fulfills this mission through beach cleanups, public and educational outreaches, fundraisers, and public speakers.
Surfrider’s annual Pasta Jam is an excellent way to reach out to the environment. Past cleanups have proven to be extremely beneficial, collecting hundreds of pounds of garbage which would otherwise pollute Long Island’s beaches and waters. According to Randy Union, Chairman of Surfrider CLI, “This is a fun and educational day complete with trash collection and documentation, music, surf videos, and crafts.” The Pasta Jam will also allow you to showcase your family’s famous tomato sauce recipe, if you do so desire, as well as sample the sauces of others. We will provide the pasta, you bring the sauce.
Bring the family for a wonderful day of sun, surf, shoreline conservation, and live music. Leave with a sense of fulfillment and a stomach full of pasta. The cleanup will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and the pavilion activities begin at 2 p.m. Rain or shine!

LI Urged Not to Let Guard Down on Hurricane Preparedness as Gloria & ’38 LI Express Hit in Late September
Uniondale, N.Y. – September 12, 2007 – As the anniversaries of the two most damaging hurricanes to hit Long Island in modern history approach, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), KeySpan, and the County Executives of both Nassau and Suffolk urge residents and businesses in the bi-county region to keep an eye on the long-range tropical weather forecasts and to continue to hurricane preparations.
On September 27, 1985, Hurricane Gloria blew across Long Island causing significant property damage and over 750,000 power outages that took nearly 12 days to fully restore. The 1938 Long Island Express, which moved up the East Coast at an unprecedented 70 miles per hour on September 21, clobbered the Island, especially the East End, with winds in excess of 180 mph causing catastrophic property damage and a number of fatalities.
“We’re not out of the woods yet,” said LIPA CEO/President Richard M. Kessel after meeting with County Executives Thomas Suozzi and Steve Levy, and Robert B. Catell, Chairman of National Grid USA to discuss some of the new hurricane response strategies the Authority has incorporated in its preparedness plans.
“Long Island must remain vigilant and continue to prepare for a hurricane or other significant emergency. We all must prepare for the worst while hoping for the best,” Mr. Kessel said.
Noting that Governor Spitzer recently issued a Proclamation declaring September 2007 as Preparedness Month in New York State, LIPA Chairman Kevin S. Law said in a statement that “As LIPA, KeySpan and governments at all levels prepare and coordinate emergency response efforts, it’s vital that those who can help others in an emergency take the time to contact their local Red Cross Chapter or VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) to sign up for a training session and an assignment so that should a hurricane or other emergency strike Long Island neighbor can help neighbor to overcome the crisis.”
“The joining together of KeySpan with National Grid has special significance when it comes to preparing for hurricanes and other emergencies, ” said Robert B. Catell, Chairman of National Grid USA. “As part of a larger, stronger, more expansive company, we will be able to supplement our highly skilled work force on Long Island with additional resources to ensure we are prepared for whatever comes our way.”
“Nassau County is ready in the event of a hurricane,” said Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi. “We are taking every precaution to ensure the safety of all Nassau County residents.”
“A crucial component of how well local governments implement their emergency plans will be how the public reacts to the advance warnings of a hurricane,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy. “One of the inherent dangers in emergency preparedness is that the early warnings that begin 48-72 hours in advance of a storm often go unheeded by the public until the clouds thicken and the winds kick up. Every Long Island resident needs to be mindful of the power and swiftness of a hurricane, and map out an emergency strategy for before, during and after the storm.”
The briefing focused, in part, on logistical coordination since LIPA has added a new element to its emergency response plan, which calls for the establishment of mini field operations locations in both counties to house and feed mutual assistance crews that would come to Long Island from outside of the region. The briefing also reviewed the coordination of so-called Reverse 911 systems to provide the public with useful information before and after an emergency, which both counties and LIPA now have available.
LIPA also underscored several of the key actions taken to prepare for heavy storm activity such as its special storm hardening program that will invest an additional $25 million per year over the next 20 years ($500 million) on targeted efforts to help protect the Island’s electric system against severe storm damage. As the storm hardening program moves forward in the years ahead, Long Island still needs to be prepared for wide-scale outages if the Island gets hit with a hurricane this season, which is predicted to be more active in the Atlantic basin than previous years.
The storm hardening expenditures is in addition to the $2.5 billion LIPA has invested over the last nine years on transmission and distribution system upgrades and improvements, and will be in addition to LIPA’s annual capital improvement expenditures of about $200 million.
In preparation for a storm, LIPA begins tracking major storms days before they near Long Island. As a major storm, or hurricane, approaches the region, LIPA takes steps to respond quickly to storm-related outages.
For customer service, “21st Century”, an automatic reporting system that can process more than 100,000 customer calls per hour can be activated. Automatically, outages are electronically recorded and reported to system operators to start the restoration process by assigning a job ticket to the reported outage.
In addition to the line crews, all employees have a second job if a major storm strikes and are trained for storm emergency assignments, and personnel work extended shifts around the clock to complete all service restorations as quickly as possible.
LIPA’s Storm Center at http://www.lipower.org/stormcenter is available 24/7 for updates, outage information and storm restoration progress reports.
To help minimize storm damage to LIPA’s electric system, LIPA’s forestry program works throughout the year to identify and trim tree limbs in rights of way and along easements that could potentially cause outages during or after a storm. Additionally, customers are urged to have trees on private property surveyed independently to be assured that their trees or bushes are not experiencing dangerous and weakening rot. Tree limbs that come in contact with electric lines remain the major cause of customer outages during storms, accounting for over 90% of all service disruptions. For more information on LIPA’s Forestry program, please visit LIPA’s Web site at http://www.lipower.org/community.
Well in advance of a hurricane or tropical storm reaching Long Island, LIPA’s customers are encouraged to follow these storm preparation recommendations to help ensure their family’s safety and comfort:
- Develop a family plan for survival and property protection. Rehearse the plan so everyone knows what to do.
- Have flashlights, battery-operated radios and extra batteries on hand. Check the batteries to make sure they are fresh.
- Know the hurricane risks in your area. Learn the storm surge history and elevation of your area. Learn the location of official shelters or make plans for a local hotel or motel. Be prepared to take alternate routes to these locations as main streets maybe closed.
- Learn safe routes inland away from the Ocean or LI Sound.
- If your residence is in a potential flood or storm surge zone, be prepared to evacuate when officials recommend it.
- Arrange now for elderly and others with special needs such as those who depend on electric life-support devices. Alert LIPA customer service (1-800-490-0025) about these support devices.
- Inventory personal property; safely secure all records and valuable documents in a watertight place.
- Have material available to protect your doors and windows. Boarding or shuttering windows is significantly more effective than taping windows which barely strengthens the window and will not protect at all against flying debris.
- Put together a family hurricane evacuation kit that includes bottled water, bedding and clothing, including sleeping bags and pillows, and appropriate prescription medicines.
- Ensure that enough non-perishable food and water supplies are on hand. NOAA suggests 1 gallon of water per person per day.
- Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
- Keep trees and shrubbery trimmed of dead wood.
- Determine where to move a boat in an emergency.
- Provide for pets.
If a hurricane or major tropical storm damages the region, Long Islanders are strongly cautioned to stay away from downed power lines. Immediately after the storm, outages will be evident to LIPA via its computerized control systems. LIPA’s computer systems automatically detect neighborhood service interruptions and begin the restoration process by alerting systems operators of the outage. However, should anyone notice a downed electric line or experience a single service interruption, call 1-800-490-0075. In addition, downed wires might end up covered by tree limbs or leaves, so be careful when letting children play outside after a storm.
For more information on hurricane preparedness, as well as links to weather sites and emergency response agencies visit LIPA’s Web site at http://lipower.org.
LIPA, a non-profit municipal electric utility, owns the retail electric Transmission and Distribution System on Long Island and provides electric service to more than 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. LIPA is the 3rd largest municipal electric utility in the nation in terms of customers served and the 6th largest in terms of electricity delivered. In 2006, LIPA outperformed all other overhead electric utilities in New York State in all three major reliability categories. IN LIEU OF GIFTS AT HER RECENT 11TH BIRTHDAY POOL PARTY
SEAFORD, NY, Sept. 7, 2007 - - Jacklyn Kate Corsitto of Seaford is no Cheap Skate! The figure skating protégé celebrated her 11th birthday on Monday, August 27, by asking her closest friends and immediate family to contribute the money they would have used to buy her presents to her Number One charity - - The Heritage Foundation of 9/11, which produces the annual Stars, Stripes & Skates IceTravaganza at the Nassau Coliseum each fall.
Through the generosity of her guests and neighbors who read about Jacklyn’s unselfishness in a local newspaper, the youngster raised almost $2,500 at a pool party at her Charles Court home in Seaford.
The Seaford Middle School sixth grader at certainly is certainly unusual in many other ways, as well. For example, on the ice, she performs a myriad of remarkable stunts, such as juggling and walking on her hands - - “tricks” which adult skaters often can’t do.
The Heritage Foundation of 9/11, which is near and dear to Jacklyn’s heart, endeavors to not only remind youngsters about the attacks of 9-11-01, but to share and educate future generations of Americans about the numerous heroes who came to the rescue of our citizens that day.
“The Heritage Foundation of 9/11 is in financial distress,” said Jackie, “which may not allow it to put on its signature event this year, the Stars, Stripes & Skates IceTravaganza, which I have been a part of in the past and where I have formed friendships and bonds with dozens of other kid skaters. It would be a tragedy if the event couldn’t be held this year.”
Stars, Stripes & Skates has been held every year since 2002, once in Madison Square Garden, three times in Nassau Coliseum and one time at Cantiague Park on Long Island.
Noted Tara Modlin, originally of Great Neck, NY, who is the founder and president of The Heritage Foundation of 9/11 and producer of Stars, Stripes & Skates: “The children who skate with us get a great sense of satisfaction by being a part of something so big and by giving back to the community - - and this gesture by Jacklyn was her personal way of making a difference. The youngsters use their athletic skills for a good cause, and also get to meet and befriend stars of all kinds, including their skating idols like Nancy Kerrigan and Oksana Baiul, in addition to community officials like former and active firefighters and police officers.”
Jacklyn’s parents, Barbara and Jack, and her sister Carly, age five, were firmly behind her in this endeavor. “We are so proud of her talents and especially Jacklyn’s altruistic attitude - - and the fact that she helped raise close to $2,500 for such an important cause,” stated Barbara Corsitto.
