Dowling College and Adelphi University Spearhead Petition

Dowling College and Adelphi University Spearhead Petition To Seek Changes to FDA’s Lifetime Ban of Gay Men from Donating Blood

OAKDALE, NY - Dowling College and Adelphi University have joined with Long Island Association for AIDS Care, Inc. (LIAAC) in seeking changes to the FDA’s lifetime ban of gay men from donating blood.

The joint effort, spearheaded by Dowling College President and former Suffolk County Executive Robert Gaffney and Dr. Robert A. Scott, President of Adelphi University, has resulted in a petition drive to collect signatures which will be presented to the FDA requesting that the federal agency remove its lifetime ban.  Petition signatures will be collected at upcoming blood drives to be conducted by Long Island Blood Services, and electronically through http://www.dowling.edu/fdapetition/.

The petition requests that the FDA replace the current prohibition with a policy that will allow gay men to donate blood after a twelve-month period has elapsed since their last homosexual contact.  According to Dr. Gail Barouh, President and CEO of LIAAC, “Great advances have been made in HIV testing, and as standard practice all donations are screened for HIV as well as hepatitis, syphilis and other factors.”

Dowling’s President Gaffney stated, “The sufficiency of our available blood supply is a constant concern.  By prohibiting those gay men who are HIV-negative and AIDS-free from donating blood during their entire lifetimes, the FDA ban exacerbates blood shortages we regularly experience.”

Adelphi University’s President Dr. Scott indicated that he is supporting the petition drive because of the recent advancements made in blood screening tests.  “I urge the FDA to reexamine its lifetime ban without delay as a change in policy might help better prepare our region should a disaster occur,” he said.

Dowling College will be holding a blood drive at the college’s Brookhaven Campus on November 6, 2007.  Any questions should be directed to the President’s Office of Dowling College at 631-244-3205.

Powerful Internet Tool Protects Brand Owners, Empowers Consumers

INTA supports events aimed at protecting brand owners and consumers as they navigate the Internet and use the Whois database

NEW YORK, NY – October 29, 2007 – The International Trademark Association (INTA) today announced it’s strong support for the Whois database, which is an important agenda item at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers’ (ICANN) 30th International Public Meeting in California beginning on October 29th, 2007.

INTA, along with the Intellectual Property Constituency (IPC) and The Commercial and Business Users Constituency are working together to promote the 30th International Public Meeting being held in Los Angeles, California, from October 29th to November 2nd, 2007. The week-long series of events includes topical information sessions and panel discussions, and culminates with a vote on the future of the Whois database.

“The Whois database is exactly the type of consumer and brand owner protection tool that we need in our arsenal against cyber crime,” said INTA Executive Director, Alan Drewsen. “For too long now, fraudulent tactics on the Internet have targeted everyday online users and legitimate brand names and owners; Whois helps shift that balance away from criminals by empowering Internet businesses and users,” affirmed Drewsen.

The Whois database, a free online directory, is important for brand owners and consumers because it:

•         Shows website ownership information for domain names

•         Includes complete contact information

•         Is available to every Internet user

•         Is used by businesses to verify customers

•         Is used by IP and law enforcement to protect brands and prevent consumer fraud

On Monday, October 29th, at 8:00 A.M. PDT in the Marina Room of the Hilton Los Angeles Airport, INTA board member J. Scott Evans will moderate an informational briefing, which will highlight the important topics surrounding the Whois database, how it protects brand owners and Internet users, and its future as a powerful consumer protection tool.

All members of the media are encouraged to attend the event as Claudio Di Gangi, INTA’s Internet and Judiciary Manager and newly-elected Vice President of the IPC, and a panel of speakers will be available for comment following the briefing. The Whois Informational Briefing will also be open via a conference call-in. To access the event live via phone, please dial + 1-866-747-9046 and enter code 3927888.

ABOUT THE SUFFOLK COUNTY VANDERBILT MUSEUM
The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum - a unique combination of mansion, marine and natural history museum, planetarium and park - is dedicated to the education and enjoyment of the people of Long Island and beyond. This mission shall be achieved through the thoughtful preservation, interpretation and enhancement of the Eagle’s Nest estate as an informal educational facility. Exhibition and program themes focus upon Long Island’s Gold Coast Era and upon William K. Vanderbilt II’s desire that his marine, natural history, and ethnographic collections promote appreciation and understanding of the marvelous diversity of life, other cultures, and scientific knowledge.

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum is located in Centerport, New York on William K. Vanderbilt II’s spectacular 43-acre, “Gold Coast” estate. Acquired in 1947, the museum opened in 1950. Vanderbilt’s will stipulated that the estate was to be dedicated to the “education and enjoyment of the public” and “enhanced” as a museum. A planetarium was built by the county in 1970. The facility is the legacy of a man with the resources to conduct collecting expeditions worldwide. The great-grandson of railroad tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt, William K. collected natural history specimens, ethnographic artifacts, fine and decorative arts. Today’s museum is accredited by the American Association of Museums and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

As a public institution, the museum offers visitors the opportunity to pursue Vanderbilt’s passion - to discover personal interests for the pure pleasure of learning. Today, the museum sponsors a wide variety of public programs that promote an appreciation for the marvelous diversity of life on our planet. http://www.vanderbiltmuseum.org/
