The Long Island String Quartet Draws the Victorian Society of New York to Dowling College

DowlingCollege.gifOAKDALE, NY – Dowling College, through a community-minded, two-year partnership with the Long Island String Quartet, presents The Long Island String Quartet in a concert performing Johannes Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet in B minor & Bela Bartok’s Piano Quintet. This performance will take place on Saturday, October 20, 2007 from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the Fortunoff Hall Ballroom at Dowling’s historic Rudolph Campus in Oakdale.

The works that will be performed at Dowling College either influenced, were written during the time of, or were influenced by chamber music of the Romantic (or Victorian) era. To compliment the Victorian music of the String Quartet, the Victorian Society of New York is coming to visit the historic campus of Dowling College and enjoy the performance. After a post-concert reception, they will have a tour of Fortunoff Hall to learn of its rich history. Founded in New York City in 1966, the Victorian Society is dedicated to fostering the appreciation and preservation of our nineteenth-century heritage as well as that of the early twentieth century.  Their activities include an active program of free lectures by experts in architecture, decorative arts, fine arts,
landscape, literature, and cultural history.

The String Quartet will feature Rose-Marie Johnson, Violin, Alia Sherbakov, Violin, Boris Deviatov, Viola, Amy Camus, Cello, John Eyre, Guest Clarinetist, and Colette Valentine, Guest Pianist.  Artistic Director, Rose-Marie Johnson, founded The Long Island String Quartet in the fall of 1992. Its performances have been in libraries, colleges, museums, historic sites and vineyards in Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island.  The Long Island String Quartet performs an extensive and rich chamber music repertoire from the Baroque to contemporary music with light classics, music by African American and Asian American composers and works composed by women.

This event is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.  For additional information, please contact Ron Armanini, Coordinator of Musical Concerts at 631-244-3351.
