LONG ISLAND PRESS RELEASES

For Immediate Release: October 24, 2007

EEAC Members Richard Mizdal and Neil Scholl Open at Rosalie Dimon Gallery

East End Arts Council Members Richard Mizdal and Neil Scholl Open at Rosalie Dimon Gallery

Riverhead, NY – A collection of Richard Mizdal’s paintings and Neil Scholl’s photographs will be on display in the Rosalie Dimon Gallery at the Jamesport Manor Inn on Manor Lane in Jamesport from November 8 through February 5, 2008. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, December 2nd from 3-5PM. The public is invited.

Richard Mizdal is best known for his combination of interior and exterior, with gardens, skies or water views presented through a window format that permits a scaffolding of architectural elements.  His work has been highly acclaimed from Dan’s Papers (on the cover of which his art has appeared several times) to the New York Times. Henry Berg of the Guggenheim wrote, “Mizdal’s paintings explore the structure of light and matter with an ever-evolving subtlety and sophistication revealing not only a mature grasp of the techniques of master painting, but a vision and understanding of nature that is truly remarkable today.”

Neil Scholl’s beautiful photographs are a celebration of Riverhead and the farm country that recalls his childhood. He reminds us that despite the ever-burgeoning housing developments, Suffolk is still the largest agricultural county in New York State. But the times are changing and some of the beautiful photos in this exhibit have already lost their subject matter to “progress.”

Sales of artwork will be made through the East End Arts Council. Rosalie Dimon Gallery shows are a joint effort of the East End Arts Council and the Jamesport Manor Inn.  EEAC exhibits are made possible with support from the New York State Council on the Arts, Suffolk County Office of Cultural Affairs and the Town of Riverhead. For more information, call 727-0900.

   Governments Unite Against Counterfeiting

INTA supports newly announced Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement

NEW YORK, NY – October 23, 2007 – The International Trademark Association (INTA) today announced full support for the new multilateral agreement on Anti-Counterfeiting that is being negotiated by the United States, European Institutions and European Union Member States, Switzerland, Mexico, New Zealand, Canada, Korea and Japan and may attract other countries committed to the protection of intellectual property.

The Anti-Counterfeiting Treaty Agreement (ACTA) encourages countries to adopt a common perspective in the fight against the global crimes of counterfeiting and piracy. To accomplish this goal, ACTA aims to increase international cooperation, identifying best practices with regard to enforcement of intellectual property rights, and pledges support for improving the international legal framework to combat counterfeiting.

INTA has been working closely with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) and the European Commission to elevate the crime of counterfeiting and piracy, and to ratify tougher sanctions against those who commit these crimes. This agreement signals progress in addressing the growing international threat of counterfeiting as a crime utilizing multiple bases of operations and underscores the need for practical improvements which result in regionally-similar penalties and multi-jurisdictional deterrence.

“The implementation of Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement requirements in national laws has proven to be insufficient to combat trademark counterfeiting which often involves organized criminal groups,” said INTA Executive Director, Alan Drewsen.

INTA has been working globally on these issues for many years and in June 2007, the INTA Board of Directors approved a resolution stating INTA’s position on harmonization principles and the improvements required within the international legal framework for criminal sanctions against the offense of trademark counterfeiting.

“Trademark counterfeiting is increasing significantly despite the best efforts of rights holders and government authorities; therefore, there is an urgent need for initiatives placing greater emphasis on international cooperation and improvement in the legal framework to combat trademark counterfeiters who operate in more than one jurisdiction,” concluded Drewsen.

For more information on the protection of trademarks, please visit www.inta.org .

Sitting on a bench in the quiet, beautiful surroundings of NYIT’s new nationally registered arboretum, a student works on her lap top.

The arboretum, part of the NYIT Old Westbury, N.Y., campus, displays a collection of trees and a variety of annual and perennial plants that are native to Long Island. Last spring, nearly 30 new species of trees, shrubs, flowering plants, groundcovers, and ferns were added to enhance existing vegetation on either side of a pathway that connects the academic quad and Gerry Hall, which houses NYIT’s Office of Admissions. Infrastructure upgrades included the installation of benches, horticultural signage, and walkway improvements. The start of NYIT’s Path of Achievement, a pathway of personalized engraved bricks commemorating loved ones and accomplishments, runs along the east side of the arboretum.New York State Senator Carl L. Marcellino was instrumental in sponsoring and securing a $150,000 grant that was administered by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation to NYIT to help fund the landscaping project.

“With its vast woodlands and meadows, NYIT’s Old Westbury campus has always been known for its beautiful natural vegetation and existing landscape design dating to the property’s origins as a Gold Coast estate,” said NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D. “The establishment of the arboretum allows NYIT to strengthen our commitment to environmentalism and sustainability. The generous assistance of Senator Marcellino and the grant we received enabled us to make improvements to enhance our students’ surroundings.”

Landscape architectural design was prepared by Vollmer Associates and planting was done by Brett Landscaping, Inc., who won the project bid.

Storm Aid Application Deadline for Queens and Brooklyn Homeowners Extended

NEW YORK, NY – The deadline for Queens and Brooklyn homeowners, renters and business owners to register for federal-state disaster assistance has been extended to November 16, state and federal recovery officials said today.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the New York State Emergency Management Office (SEMO) extended the deadline because of concern for people who suffered damages from the August 8 storm, but who still have not applied for assistance.

“If you know a neighbor, family member, or friend who suffered losses from the August 8 storm, tell them that the deadline has been extended and urge them to apply,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Marianne C. Jackson of FEMA.

Disaster assistance can include home repair grants; disaster rental assistance; U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans for individuals and business owners; and grants for serious disaster-related needs and expenses.

“Take advantage of the extra time,” said State Coordinating Officer John R. Gibb, Director of the New York State Emergency Management. “If you have suffered losses from the storm, register, get into the FEMA system and see what kind of assistance is available to you.”

New York State and FEMA are working closely with New York City to get assistance to people. To date, more than 3,000 people have registered and $5.6 million in disaster grants and low-interest loans for homeowners, renters and business owners have been approved.”

There are two easy ways to begin the application process.  You may call toll-free, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY 1-800-462-7585.  Both numbers are available from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and multilingual operators are available to answer your call. Residents with Internet access now have the option to register on the agency’s website at www.fema.gov, where valuable recovery information is also available

On August 31, President Bush signed a major disaster declaration for New York State.  Renters, homeowners and business owners in Queens and Brooklyn can apply for state/federal assistance.
