Don Duga Does Demo at Holiday Market Plus
Riverhead, NY (November 29, 2007)—Don Duga, the legendary animator of Rankin/ Bass Christmas classics like Frosty the Snowman, The Year Without a Santa Claus, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and full-length features like The Last Unicorn (starring Mia Farrow and Jeff Bridges), will be at the East End Arts Council’s Holiday Market PLUS,121 East Main Street in Riverhead, to give an animation demonstration for children. On Saturday, December 15th, at 12:00, in conjunction with Laura Helms’ Story Hour, Mr. Duga will show the kids how he draws some of the world’s most beloved characters, even sketching those kids right into the scenes.
Don Duga has been at the forefront of American animation for more than 40 years, having worked with some of the most prestigious animation studios in the world. He is a versatile animator, director and producer. His experience ranges from work with UPA and Rankin/Bass Studios to commercials, Sesame Street and feature films. Don has storyboarded such classic characters as Mr. Magoo and Underdog, and has worked on animated features such as the Mad Monster Party and Day Dreamer. As a storyboard artist at Rankin/Bass Studios, Don specialized in laying out the essential frame work for the various film projects. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s Don worked animating commercials for various national companies. A relationship with Hostess Foods proved to be a large success for Don, where he designed and brought to life such memorable characters as Twinkie the Kid, Captain Cupcake, King Ding Dong, and Fruit Pie the Magician. Polestar Films and Associated Arts, a company DUGA co-founded along with animator Irra Verbitsky, has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Carnegie Medal for Best Children’s Film of the Year and the Asifa East Award for their work on Owen, which was narrated by Sarah Jessica Parker. The Holiday Market PLUS features beautiful and unique handcrafted gifts made by local artisans, and will be open daily through the 23rd of December. Unique Handcrafted Gifts at The East End Arts Council Holiday Market
Riverhead, NY (November 29, 2007)—The EEAC is excited to present not one, but two Holiday Markets this year—our traditional juried Holiday Market in the EEAC gallery, and a special Holiday Market PLUS.
Holiday Market PLUS opens Friday, November 16th, from 5-8 pm, and will run everyday through December 23rd. This expanded Holiday Market takes place in the building that formerly housed Crave Computers at 121 E. Main Street in Riverhead, and includes beautiful handcrafted items from all over Long Island. The hours are as follows: M-F, 10-6; Sat., 10-4; and Sun., 12-4. In addition to the abundance of gift items, there will be live music presentations, craft demonstrations, artist demonstrations, storytelling for kids, a visit from Santa, and more.
A full schedule will be available on the website after November 16th, listed on a calendar at the market, and available by request from support@eastendarts.org.
The gallery Holiday Market, which is a juried show and also features handmade pieces and art by local artisans, opens on November 30th from 5-8 pm. The shopping hours are the same as above.

Life Drawing Sessions at The East End Arts Council
Riverhead, NY (November 29, 2007)—The East End Arts Council now offers ongoing life-drawing sessions at their newly renovated Carriage House, located behind the gallery at 133 East Main Street in Riverhead.
Drawing sessions take place every Thursday night from 6:30-9:30pm (December’s schedule: 12/6, 12/13, 12/20; no session 12/27). A nude or draped model will take a single pose, with breaks, for the duration of the session. The fee is $10, in cash, per session (for model’s fees), which is subject to increase if fewer than 7 people attend. Chairs are available, but artists must bring easels.

The East End Arts Council Classical Holiday Violin
Riverhead, NY (November 29, 2007)–The East End Arts Council Community School of the Arts is pleased to present a “Shopping Time” performance by Mr. James Lewin at the EEAC Holiday Market Place Plus on Sunday, December 9 from 2 – 3:30 PM.
Mr. Lewin is a graduate of the Aaron Copland School of and held the position of Principal Viola with the Queens College, Potsdam and St. Lawrence Orchestras and adjunct faculty St. Lawrence University. He is currently a faculty member of EEAC CSA and recently appeared with the Stage Band for the live Radio Show, Where the Prairie Meets the Bay. Mr. Lewin is currently involved in a new music concert series with the Long Island Composers Alliance and the Hidden City Quartet.
The EEAC Holiday Market Plus offers a variety of reasonably priced, one-of-a kind gifts hand-crafted by local artisans and is located in the former Crave Computer Store at 121 E. Main St., Riverhead. LIPA’s Second Annual Trade Ally Energy Solutions Expo
Uniondale, NY-November 30, 2007-Continuing with its efforts to promote energy conservation and efficiency, The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) is hosting its second annual Trade Ally Energy Solutions Expo.
The event will be held on December 13, 2007 at the Sheraton Long Island Center in Smithtown, NY from 8:00AM-4:00PM.
The Trade Ally Energy Solutions Expo offers an opportunity to network with peers and learn about new products and services. Three seminars will be conducted on constructing residential and commercial high performance buildings. The first seminar addresses building “Healthy Green Housing” and it will include information about the Energy Star certification process, windows, HVAC and more. The second seminar will focus on commercial building science. During this segment information on LEED certification and High Performance Design will be available. The third seminar is Redbook Training. Participants will learn about LIPA’s specifications and requirements for electric fundamentals. Each of the seminars are worth 4 credited hours.
LIPA offers many programs and services available to both small and large businesses within its LIPA Clean Energy Initiative (CEI). The CEI provides rebate incentives and consultation services to eligible commercial/industrial customers who install qualifying energy-efficient technologies as part of renovation or new construction projects. electric generation technologies and energy conservation and efficiency.

New Independence Leadership
ROCKY POINT, NY (11/29/2007; 1736)(readMedia)– Suffolk Independence Party Chairman Frank MacKay today announced that noted political strategist Anthony Manetta, President of Islandia-based Roosevelt Strategy Group, has joined the Independence Party. Dowling College Announces New Master of Science in Adolescence Education With a Middle Childhood Extension
OAKDALE, NY - Dowling College, in response to the needs expressed by school districts and teachers alike, is offering a new graduate program leading to initial certification in Adolescence Education (grades 7-12) with a Middle Childhood Education extension (grades 5-6). Students can be certified in the areas of: Biology, Business Education, Chemistry, Earth Science, English, French, Mathematics, Physics, Social Studies and Spanish. This program will prepare teacher candidates for the challenges of teaching diverse populations in grades 5-12. This program will begin in Spring 2008, with a total of 36 credits.
Candidates will learn how to assess students while in the field and will receive an integrated approach to differentiated instruction. Participants will have the opportunity to learn instructional strategies and classroom management skills from experienced master practitioners. They will learn advanced teaching methods in their own content area while they engage in a part-time field experience. Candidates will receive a full-time student teaching experience in inclusive classrooms supervised by experts in the field and have the opportunity to tutor students with special needs.
“This program has been designed to provide graduate students with experience that fully meets the ever-changing needs of the educational system. Learning from master practitioners, they will gain the understanding to help students learn in a supportive and nurturing learning environment,” said Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling College’s School of Education. “Having the opportunity to tutor students with diverse needs, they will learn to form productive connections with students with varying abilities and truly make a

Hospital Staff Will Present Teddy Bears to New Mothers and Pediatric Patients
Lake Success, N.Y., November 21, 2007 – Today, Canon U.S.A., Inc., donated 60 teddy bears to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, N.Y. The teddy bears will be given to new mothers and pediatric patients admitted to the hospital. The same teddy bears are sold by Canon to raise funds for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) through their annual charity event, which is just one of many ways Canon supports NCMEC in their efforts to bring children home.

The East End Arts Council Community School of the Arts Brings Cultural Hand
Riverhead, NY (November 21, 2007)—The East End Arts Council is thrilled to announce that it will bring the Talking Drum, a cultural hand-drumming program, to the Montauk Academy of the Arts, a fledgling non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the arts to the children of the Montauk area. The program will be held at the Academy’s art center located at 89 Euclid Ave in Montauk on Saturday, December 8, 15 & 29 from 2 - 3:30 PM. Teens and preteens will be instructed by drummer Jerome Liggon in the rhythms of traditional African and Afro-Cuban drumming. Each session will be filmed by the academy and aired on LTV.
“The Talking Drum began in October of 2006. The East End Arts Council received a grant in January of 2007 to bring the program to the communities of the East End. Since January the council has brought the program to various groups including Southampton Youth Services, Family Service League of Riverhead, and the First Baptist Church of Riverhead, and held classes at the EEAC Community School of the Arts. Children between the ages of 9 and 18 are eligible to attend the program on an unrestricted scholarship.
