The East End Arts Council Community School of the Arts Brings Cultural Hand Drumming to Montauk

Riverhead, NY (December 7, 2007)—The East End Arts Council is thrilled to announce that it will bring its cultural hand-drumming program, the Talking Drum, to the Montauk Academy of the Arts, a fledgling non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the arts to the children of the Montauk area. The program will be held at the Academy’s art center located at 89A Euclid Ave. in Montauk on Saturdays (December 8, 15 & 29) from 2 - 3:30 PM. Teens and preteens may attend one or all three FREE classes and will be instructed by drummer Jerome Liggon in the rhythms of traditional African and Afro-Cuban drumming. Each session will be filmed by the Academy and aired on LTV.

The Talking Drum began in October of 2006. The East End Arts Council received a grant in January of 2007 to bring the program to the communities of the East End. Since January the council has brought the program to various groups including Southampton Youth Services, Family Service League of Riverhead, First Baptists Church of Riverhead and held classes at the EEAC Community School of the Arts. Children between the ages of 9 and 18 are eligible to attend the program on an unrestricted scholarship, which means it’s free for kids.

Community Church of East Williston to Host Jazz Holiday

Community Church of East Williston to Host Jazz Holiday

The Community Church of East Williston to Host “A Jazz Holiday,” an multicultural evening of Holiday Music featuring the Jarad Astin Trio. Mr. Astin, also the current Director of Music at the Community Church, is an accomplished jazz artist, with 3 commercial recordings under his belt on CueZone Records, an independent record label formed in 2001 with partner Ben Senterfit, during an 8 year period in which he lived in the
Rocky Mountains, just west of Boulder Colorado.

The Concert will feature other musicians from within the New York City jazz community, forming the favorite “piano trio,”  and will play host to a repertoire of material that exemplifies the many different ways in which most people in this country celebrate the upcoming Holiday Season - from our favorite secular songs (ala  Rudolph, Santa, Frosty),  favorite Christian Hymns, as well as music from Chanukah and  Kwanzaa - all in a swinging, improvisatory setting reminiscent of Oscar Petersen and the like.

A small donation of $5 is being asked at the performance, and light refreshments will be available. Contact the church office at 516-742-9690, or email to jarad@cuezonerecords.com for additional information.

Jarad Astin
Jarad is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts (’98), where he studied closely with Edward Simon (Kevin Eubanks, Bobby Watson, Paquito D’Rivera, and Terence Blanchard), and legendary organist Trudy Pitts. After graduating in 1998, Mr. Astin began working professionally in the church as an accompanist, and has
since held Directorships in New Nation Church of God in Christ, as well as his current Music Directorship at the Community Church - working with Choirs, Praise Teams, and Pastors in many different styles of worship. Jarad also went on to produce over 15 recordings, as well as starting his own independent label in Colorado, as well as managing Modern Vintage Studio’s, the main creative outlet for CueZone Records.

Mr. Astin has worked in many capacities with the label - from engineer to producer, studio musician to recording artist, as well as in graphic design and reproductions for many of the releases under CueZone, as well as being the driving force that secured national distribution for the label in 2002.
