Signs, Signs, Signs! East End Arts Council Artist Exhibit at Town Hall

Riverhead, NY (January 7, 2008)—The East End Arts Council and the Town of Riverhead announce an exhibit by local artist, Peter Bel, at Riverhead Town Hall, which will run from January 17 to April 23, 2008. The show features the artist’s explorations of the signs we all see as we make our way through the day—signs in the workplace, in stores and offices, in places of worship. What do they mean to our lives? In painting some of these signs, the artist changes our perspective, and, in turn, perhaps, the original intent of the signs.

Mr. Bel has been a drill press operator, a warehouse worker, a seaman, a tugboat fireman, a ship cleaner and a longshoreman. He spent thirty-six years as a longshoreman, mostly on the Brooklyn waterfront, at which time he went to Brooklyn College at night and received a BA in Anthropology and a Law Degree from Brooklyn Law School. He says of his fascination with art, “Art to me is the manifestation of people’s thoughts; the many varieties of people’s expressions find, in art, a means to that end.”

The show is a collaborative effort on the part of the East End Arts Council and the Township of Riverhead to support local artists and introduce their work to the community.
