Cathy Kreger and What It Iz headline the evening with Cathy Kreger’s passionate lead vocals and solid acoustic guitar. Atlantis Marine World Officer To Climb Mount Everest.
Atlantis Marine World is sponsoring its Chief Operations Officer, Bob Pospischil, on his summit of Mount Everest. The 59-year-old Nesconset resident and former US Marine Fighter Pilot and Top Gun Instructor will be gone for nine weeks as he leaves Long Island to climb Mt. Everest.
“I have been interested in climbing for many years and three years ago, I finally stepped off the edge and just did it,” explains Pospischil. “What makes this climb especially thrilling is that, through all my research, it appears I am the first Long Islander to attempt the climb!”
In 2005, Pospischil reached the summit of Mt. Rainer, in Washington state. This was followed by climbs of Mt. Cayambe (South America), Mt. Cotopaxi (South America), Mt. Elbrus (Europe), Mt. Aconcagua (South America), and Mt. Cho Oyu (Himalayas). These experiences, in addition to a vigorous training schedule, have now prepared him for the ultimate challenge, the Mt. Everest expedition.
“I believe that my age has nothing to do with my abilities,” Pospischil says. “With this expedition to Mt. Everest, I hope to show people that no obstacle can keep them from realizing their own goals.”
Pospischil is hoping that his attempt will also help others. He is working with the Islandia-based Contractors for Kids non-profit to raise awareness and money for its mission, which is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have impacted their lives through sickness, injury, or death.
Starting March 27, people can visit http://www.rmiguides.com/himalaya/everest-trek.html and follow Pospischil’s daily journey in photos as he summits Mt. Everest.

Local Long Island Author Blends A Touch of Irish Folklore With Charming Urban Fantasy in the Lighthearted “Tales of Tanglewood”
In the wake of the last Harry Potter novel comes a refreshingly new and endearing tale that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. The Tales of Tanglewood: The Lon Dubh Whistle is the first in a series of new novels to be written by local Long Island author Scott Michael Kessman.
Smithtown, NY, — The Tales of Tanglewood: The Lon Dubh Whistle proudly stands apart from the mass of copycat fantasy fiction and mundane adventure stories currently flooding the market.
Gathering inspiration from a recent trip to Ireland as well as many of Long Island’s beautiful parks, Scott deftly weaves together subtle traces of Irish folklore with more traditional fantasy in an urban setting. The result is a beautifully written story containing the perfect combination of fun, mirth, magic, and adventure.
Within the pages of the book, readers will discover Colin, a child who is fully aware of the hidden world of myth and wonder hiding within the woods just beyond his home, long kept secret by old magic. Only the fey magic which runs through his veins has enabled Colin to find what others cannot; the Tanglewood, the ‘wood within the woods.
Full of odd characters and fey beings, the Tanglewood is a world of magnificent folklore come to life. As Colin begins to explore the Tanglewood, he will find friendship with the ferrish Ailfrid, the elfin girl Deidre, and Doc Muffingrow, a wise druid.
Colin will also find that there is much magic in himself, as well as dangerous enemies who will not let him find solace in the wood so easily. Ailil, King of the Sprites and ruler of The Below, has laid claim to his spirit, and Colin will need the help of his friends and quite a bit of magic to save himself.
The Tanglewood is a place like no other, and Colin is a boy like no other. Throughout his adventures, he will uncover the secret of the fey blood within him, and help dispel the poisonous corruption and hidden dangers that threaten the inhabitants of the wood and the Tanglewood itself.
The Tales of Tanglewood: The Lon Dubh Whistle is available online at all major book retailers such as Amazon.com, Borders, Barnes & Nobles, and other, and can be ordered through local booksellers.
Reviews
“In a world filled with strife and hardship it is a stroke of luck when a book appears to take one away from it all. The Tales of Tanglewood: The Lon Dubh Whistle is just such a story.
This is a chronicle of a young boy named Colin and the seemingly unexceptional forest beyond his parent’s yard. Colin felt the woods to be special, and often dreamed of the magic that was busy in the trees in the form of wood nymphs, elves and other creatures. One warm summer night, upon awakening from a recurrent charmed dream, he followed his instincts outside into the woods. After pushing through the trees for some time he came to an archway, and then to a clearing, where before his eyes, cast in the glow of firelight was…well, here the adventure takes off for young Colin in The ‘Wood. Colin is initiated into the grove with characters like the be-horned Ailfrid, Colin’s fairy guide; Doc Muffingrow, the druid and muffin-baker extraordinaire; and Deidre, the strong-willed elfin runner. But all is not right and peaceful in The ‘Wood. And as Colin always suspected, he is not a simple Kynney Deiney; or member of the human race, but in fact possesses Blood of the Fey, or fairy spirit.
What ensues is an engaging adventure of transformation and rebirth all through the world of the supernatural, rife with the creatures of one’s wildest imagination; brownies, sprites and pixies abounding.
This book is a delight for all ages. The Tales of Tanglewood is fundamentally charming, from its enchanting characters to its deft anthropomorphizing of the natural world. Whereas some fairy fables devolve into sentimentality, this tale is utterly entrancing. Written in clean, capable prose, the story moves without a hitch to the final pages, which hint at more Tanglewood tales to come. The reader should be so fortunate.”

LIPA and National Grid Create Repowering Stakeholder Committee for Northport and Port Jefferson Power Stations
Uniondale, NY- A Repowering Stakeholder Committee created by the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) and National Grid consisting of government, environmental, and business representatives held its initial meeting today at National Grid’s Melville offices.
LIPA and National Grid issued an RFP in December of 2007 for a study to investigate the economic and technical feasibility of repowering options at the Northport and Port Jefferson Power Stations. The Stakeholder Committee was formed to assist LIPA and National Grid in this effort.
“The Stakeholder Committee is an essential element of the repowering study,” said LIPA President and CEO Kevin S. Law. “LIPA is committed to delivering clean, safe, reliable and economical electric service to its customers. The Committee will help us to determine if we can achieve these goals through repowering options at these sites.”
“National Grid has been working on this issue for some time now,” said Robert B. Catell, Chairman of National Grid US. “We are encouraged that Kevin Law is showing tremendous leadership in this important issue.”
The repowering study will investigate options for these two sites using both traditional “hybrid” repowering scenarios which utilize the existing steam turbines and “backyard” or site repowering scenarios in which a new, highly efficient combined cycle facility is constructed on the existing site. The benefits of repowering existing plants include
greater efficiency, increased capacity and reduced emission rates. This study will also look at the financial implications to ratepayers as repowering our plants could indeed be very expensive.
The Stakeholder Committee will be provided information for review and comment throughout the study period and will interact with LIPA, National Grid and Stone and Webster, the consultant selected to perform the study, as the study proceeds.
Items that must be thoughtfully considered include engineering and technical feasibilities, economics, and environmental impacts. These are only several of many factors which will weigh in the ultimate decision, which is why LIPA/National Grid assembled this panel of individuals who know Long Island and care deeply about its future to assist in reviewing the available options.
“The formation of the Repowering Stakeholder Committee is the first step in a very important process to determine the most efficient and effective way to generate power at the Port Jefferson and Northport Power Stations,” said Senator Kenneth P. LaValle. “I look forward to working with LIPA, National Grid and the community to ensure that any decision will be environmentally sound and serve the best interests of ratepayers.”
“The LIPC strongly believes that Long Island power plants should be repowered,” said Lisa Tyson, Stakeholder Committee member and Director of the Long Island Progressive Coalition. “We are excited that LIPA and National Grid have created this Committee and we are pleased that the LIPC is involved and will have its voice heard as part of this process.”
For more information on the repowering RFP visit the LIPA website at http://www.lipower.org/company/papers/rfp/repowering.html.
In the US, National Grid delivers electricity to approximately 3.3 million customers in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island, and manages the electricity network on Long Island under an agreement with the Long Island Power Authority. National Grid is the largest power producer in New York State, owning 6,650 megawatts of electricity generation that provides power to over one million customers on Long Island and supplies roughly a quarter of New York City’s electricity needs. It is also the largest distributor of natural gas in the northeastern U.S., serving approximately 3.4 million customers in New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
LIPA, a non-profit municipal electric utility, owns the retail electric Transmission and Distribution System on Long Island and provides electric service to more than 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. LIPA is the 2nd largest municipal electric utility in the nation in terms of electric revenues, 3rd largest in terms of customers served and the 7th largest in terms of electricity delivered. In 2006, LIPA outperformed all other overhead electric utilities in New York State in all three major reliability categories. LIPA does not provide natural gas service or own any on-island generating assets. More information about LIPA can be found online at: http://www.lipower.org
