East End Arts Council Juried Painting Show The Face
Riverhead, NY - The East End Arts Council will be accepting submissions for the juried painting and drawing show The Face, which will run from June 6– July 11, 2008. The show is open to all painting and drawing media, including pastels. Artists may submit artwork for consideration to the EEAC gallery, 133 East Main Street, Riverhead, on May 29 -31 from 10 AM-4 PM.
The guest jurors for the show will be Robert Armetta, director of the Long Island Academy of Fine Art in Riverhead, and Ruth Appelhof, executive director of Guild Hall in East Hampton. (For more information on Mr. Armetta and Dr. Appelhof, please visit http://www.eastendarts.org/gallery/juror.html)

Special Guests Announce Nominees on WLIU Show In the Morning
Riverhead, NY — The 2008 slate of nominees for the Teeny Awards, the ground-breaking student theatre arts recognition program of the East End Arts Council (EEAC) in collaboration with the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center, will be announced live on In the Morning, Bonnie Grice’s talk show on WLIU, 88.3FM, on Wednesday, May 7, at 9:40 am. “I will be bringing two special guests with me this year,” said Toni Munna, Teeny Awards Coordinator.
Ms. Grice, who will be returning for her sixth year as emcee of the awards ceremony, will announce the nominees, along with Denise Donovan, executive team leader of human resources from the Riverhead Target, a key sponsor, and A.J. Lebenns, a graduate of Eastport South Manor High School and multiple Teeny Award winner.
The Teeny Awards celebrates its sixth anniversary with its ceremony on Sunday, June 8, 2008, during which the winners will be announced. Schools under the jurisdiction of the East End Arts Council are eligible. Those participating this year include Center Moriches, East Hampton, Eastport-South Manor, Greenport, Hampton Bays, Mattituck, Pierson in Sag Harbor, Riverhead and Mercy-McGann in Riverhead, Ross School in East Hampton, Shelter Island, Shoreham-Wading River, Southampton, Southold, and Westhampton Beach.
“Much like the countywide athletic awards, the Teeny Awards celebrate the dedication, concentration and teamwork required to put on a production and focus on individual and group achievement irrespective of the size of the school or the amount of money allotted to the production,” said Patricia Snyder, East End Arts Council Executive Director and Teeny Awards Founder.

School of the Arts String Ensemble to Perform
Riverhead, NY — The East End Arts Council School of the Arts String Ensemble, Nota Bene, is set to perform for A River Runs Through It: The Great Riverhead Story, a program cosponsored by Suffolk County and Suffolk County National Bank, on Friday, May 9th at 6:30 PM at the Vail-Leavitt Music Hall (Peconic Ave., Riverhead).
Under the direction of James Lewin, the ensemble will perform a repertoire of traditional classical and folk favorites. The public is welcome. The ensemble will also perform on-stage at the Community Mosaic Street Painting in Riverhead on Sunday, May 25th. The Community Mosaic is a fun, arts and music filled street fair held each year in downtown Riverhead. Riverhead, NY - As part of its mission to make space available to artists for exhibiting, the EEAC announces its first Carriage House Member Solo Show. The first member artist to show is Lisa Petker Mintz of Plainview; her work will be on view from May 2 through May 20, 2008 in the multi-use room of the Carriage House on the EEAC grounds (133 Main Street, Riverhead). Dowling College and GEAR UP Offer Free Conference for Parents Wyandanch Community to Experience Day of Learning and Fun
(Oakdale, N.Y.) Dowling College and The GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) partnership are sponsoring a free conference on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at Wyandanch Memorial High School. Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of the School of Education at Dowling College, will be the keynote speaker for this premiere event. This parent conference has been made possible through the support of FidelisCare.
The conference will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Complimentary breakfast and lunch will be served. Vendors and exhibitors will be present and child care will be available. A “poetry slam” will showcase the creative talents of Wyandanch students. Door prizes will also be offered to participants.
Parents from Wyandanch and surrounding communities are invited to experience a day of learning and fun where they will be recognized for the heroic efforts they are making every day to raise their children to be healthy, successful adults in today’s complex world.

Attorney General of New York Andrew Cuomo to Speak at Landmark
(Port Washington, N.Y.) Landmark on Main Street continues its thought provoking Conversations From Main Street Series with an on-stage interview of New York State Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo, on Monday, May 12th at 7:30 PM. Elkan Abramowitz will conduct the interview. The Conversations From Main Street Series is sponsored by Angela & Scott Jaggar with additional season sponsorship from Harding Real Estate and Wachovia Bank.
Andrew Cuomo was elected the 64th Attorney General of New York State on November 7, 2006. As Attorney General, Cuomo is the highest law enforcement officer for the State, responsible for representing New York and its residents in legal matters. Interactive Program Goes Behind the Scenes with Mammal Trainers.
Learn what it really takes to be a trainer at Atlantis Marine World! The Aquarium’s Trainer for a Day program invites children over 10 years of age to don their rubber boots and shadow its Marine Mammal Staff on a Saturday from April through September to see what it’s really like to care for marine mammals.
During the nearly two-hour session, “Trainers for a Day” assist the Marine Mammal Staff with their daily routines including food preparation and participation in a harbor seal training session. They are also provided reserved seating at our Sea Lion Show, with this behind-the-scenes opportunity concluded with the once-in-a-lifetime experience of getting a kiss from a seal.
Participants also receive a free Atlantis Marine World t-shirt, certificate of completion, commemorative seal kiss photo, and Aquarium Admission for that day.
About Trainer for a Day
Participants must be at least 10 years old and accompanied by a paying adult or guardian.
Session size is limited to four people per session.
Availability: Saturdays; April through September
