EEAC School of the Arts Receives NYSCA Funding for Music

New York State Council on the Arts to fund African Drum Classes in Riverhead

(Riverhead, NY) —Through a generous grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, the East End Arts Council is once again able to bring West African hand drumming to downtown Riverhead. A summer session of eight classes will be held at the School of the Arts, located at 141 East Main Street in Riverhead. Classes will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6 – 8:00 pm, beginning July 9, 2008. This program is available free of charge to minority youth between the ages of 11 and 18 years of age. Non-minority youth may also be eligible for grant monies for this program. Instruction includes hand positioning, drum tones and traditional rhythms and chant. The class is taught by Daniel Bailey of East Hampton, who spent much of his childhood living in South and West Africa learning from African drum masters. Many of Daniel’s students go on to perform with him at festivals and events throughout Long Island.
