Miranda Chakos, MD of SUNY Downstate Medical Center leads research for local patients
(West Babylon, N.Y.) Imagine going through the day without the ability to concentrate and focus on the things you enjoy and important tasks that you need to complete. Think what it would be like, struggling to remember what you just talked about or learned a short time ago. Consider how you would feel if you couldn’t even accomplish simple tasks, such as making a phone call, grocery shopping or scheduling an appointment.
We all have challenging moments . . . but for people suffering from schizophrenia, these frustrations are a way of life, virtually every day. People with schizophrenia struggle to concentrate, remember and learn. These deficits associated with the thinking process are called cognitive impairments, making it difficult to accomplish the demands of everyday life, both big and small.
Managing the demands of daily life is made easier when individuals with schizophrenia maintain a stable regimen of medication – even more so for those with trusted family members or caregivers to help oversee the individual’s personal affairs and coordinate care. Despite the challenges, most people with schizophrenia and their caregivers are searching for a better quality of life.
Fortunately, there is hope, thanks to a new investigational drug research study now underway in the West Babylon, NY area. The primary goal of this study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational drug in improving cognitive functioning for people with schizophrenia, using a new evaluation tool called MATRICS (Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia). This study is unique because participants are not required to change their already-stable medication regimen. Rather, the new investigational medication is added to their currently established treatment.
Candidates for this study must be 18 to 65 years old, diagnosed with schizophrenia at or before age 35 and currently taking one of five medications for schizophrenia which include olanzapine, risperidone/paliperidone, quetiapine or aripiprazole. Participants must also be considered outpatient (living in the community). Qualified study participants will receive all investigational medication and study-related care at no cost, and may also receive compensation for travel.
Miranda Chakos, MD of SUNY Downstate Medical Center seeks participants for this new study. If you or someone you know suffers from schizophrenia, please contact us for additional information at 888.988.6736. Further details about the study are also available at www.cognitivestudy.com.

The opening reception will be held on Friday, August 29 from 5-8 pm. There is no cost for admission, and the public is invited.

As Mark Singer puts it in the foreword to her book, ‘…her photos brilliantly depict behind the scenes, or just below the surface, the flow and tempo of a city populated by creatures (by no means always human) who tirelessly perform, make art, take risks, plot spectacles and stir epiphanies in the act of rendering life more interesting for the rest of us’.

New line contains popular bit profiles featuring industrial-quality carbide inserts that increase tool life and reduce production costs
Â
Farmingdale, N.Y. – August 20, 2008 – Amana Tool, manufacturers of industrial-quality tungsten carbide woodworking tools, today announced its In-Tech™ line of replaceable carbide insert knife router bits that bring industrial woodworking technology to portable router machines. The series comprises nine router bits that feature industrial-quality replaceable carbide knives instead of standard brazed carbide tips. In-Tech router bits are priced comparable to standard router bits but last up to four times longer, saving users money during the life of the tool as knives are replaced rather than the entire tool.
Â
The In-Tech replaceable knives are made of a harder sub-micro grade carbide than those used on standard brazed router bits. This higher grade of carbide significantly increases the life of the router bit and makes the bits ideal for use in harder types of materials such as MDF and chipboard. By replacing worn knives instead of sharpening standard carbide tipped bits, router bit dimensions, cutting quality and accuracy remain constant during the life of the tool.
Â
Amana Tool technical director, Frank Misiti, said, “We take great pride in our customer-focused innovation and are pleased to provide industrial-quality cutting tools and precision for the home user at an affordable price. With the unveiling of our In-Tech series, we’re now ensuring that our customers can achieve the best results possible while saving labor, time and money.â€
Â
In-Tech router bits have a 1/4†shank and are available in nine popular profiles  The In-Tech router bits are sold individually starting at $16.88 USD, and replacement knives start at $3.08 USD through Amana Tool’s authorized distributors. For the location nearest you, visit www.amanatool.com.

System features one tool body with multiple carbide insert knives that last twice as long as comparable solid carbide bits
Â
Farmingdale, N.Y. – Amana Tool, manufacturers of industrial-quality tungsten carbide woodworking tools, today introduced its In-Groove™ CNC insert engraving system featuring one tool body with multiple carbide insert engraving tips for a variety of applications. In-Groove users can produce crisp, clean cuts with unique knife shapes that enable efficient chip removal allowing for improved cutting performance and faster operation. The In-Groove system is ideal for sign making, lettering and engraving applications in laminated materials, veneers, MDF, plastics, wood, aluminum and solid surface.
Â
Amana Tool’s In-Groove CNC insert engraving system features industrial-quality replaceable carbide insert knives that can be replaced on the tool body while it is mounted in the CNC machine, which ensures consistent cutting accuracy by eliminating the setup process and height adjustment. The insert knives are made from sub-micro grain carbide particles that creates a finer edge, are more resistant to wear and last at least twice as long as standard comparable solid carbide bits. The high-grade carbide provides long-lasting, high-quality finishes and cutting performance ideal for abrasive materials such as laminated materials, veneers, solid surface, MDF, plastics and hard wood. V-tips are also suitable for aluminum.Â
Â
“The In-Groove system allows users to customize their CNC engraving machines with a variety of popular router profiles in a single tool, saving setup time and labor,†said Frank Misiti, Technical Director of Amana Tool. “Our high-quality carbide and manufacturing process yield a superior router bit that delivers the best possible results across the widest range of materials.â€
Â
The In-Groove tool body, available in 1/4†and 1/2†shank diameters, is expertly balanced and can rotate at very high speeds with virtually no vibration. Users can choose from up to 30 different inserts that are available in v-tips of 30, 60 or 90 degrees with seven different point thicknesses, as well as other profiles including straight plunge, core box and corner round. Custom profiles are also available.
Â
The In-Groove System starts at $63.53 USD and comprises one tool body (required) and a knife tip; additional replacement knives are $19.75 USD. All In-Groove tools and accessories are available through Amana Tool’s authorized distributors. For the location nearest you, visit www.amanatool.com.

The Anthony Giordano Gallery at Dowling College Presents Infrastructures: Photographs by Bryan Whitney
Exhibition Dates: September 7 - October 12, 2008, Reception: September 21, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., Q&A with Bryan Whitney at 2:00 p.m.
OAKDALE, NY - The Anthony Giordano Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs by Bryan Whitney. Mr. Whitney’s images of communication towers emphasize the formal complexity and strangeness of some of the most distinctive structures in the contemporary landscape. In his negative images, the presence of these industrial structures exude a sense of mystery and enigmatic power that belies their practical role in modern telecommunications. These works pay homage to the invisible, almost animistic, authority that these technological structures wield over so much of contemporary life and to the elegance of their construction. This exhibition also features a photo installation in the Marjorie Fortunoff Mayrock Conservatory at the Rudolph campus.
Located at the corner of Idle Hour Boulevard and Biltmore Avenue in Oakdale, The Anthony Giordano Gallery at Dowling College is dedicated to exhibiting and promoting contemporary, innovative and experimental work by established, unaffiliated and emerging artists as well as artists primarily from the New York tri-state metropolitan area. Through exhibitions and educational programs, the Gallery reflects, reinforces, and complements the curricular dimensions of the Visual Arts Department and addresses the cultural life and enrichment of the Dowling College community, the general public, artists, and the Oakdale community at large.
Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free. For more information please call 631.244.3016 or visit us online at www.dowling.edu.
