National Hero Visits Sachem High School North and East

National Hero Visits Sachem High School North and East

On October 16 & 17, Darius Weems touched the hearts of 1500 Sachem High School Health Education students and raised awareness for a debilitating form of muscular dystrophy.  Darius and his production crew of college students made a surprise visit to Sachem North and Sachem East high schools. Joining Darius was Javier, an adorable 4-year-old also afflicted with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).

“Darius Goes West: The Roll of His Life” is an award-winning documentary film, starring Darius, then 15 years old. In an effort to have a popular MTV show customize his wheelchair, Weems and his dedicated group of friends organized an expedition via RV from Athens, Georgia to Los Angeles, California. The aim of the film and the presentation was to raise awareness for DMD as well as highlight wheelchair accessibility throughout the United States.

The film, “Darius Goes West” was shown in Health Education classes prior to the assembly presentation. In-depth health discussion of the film set the groundwork for developing empathy skills when considering tolerance, caregiver issues and application of the Americans with Disabilities Act.  It was evident from Darius’ overwhelming reception that his message will be indelibly engrained in the hearts and minds of Sachem’s students.

The Sachem student body presented a $2,000 donation to Darius and his production crew in support of their cause. As one student so eloquently wrote in class, “Through Darius’ struggle living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a terminal condition, people are exposed to the magnitude of others’ hardships and are able to understand how minute the nuisances that they complain about tend to be.”

Darius was joined with Javier Romero, a four-year old Stony Brook native who also suffers from DMD.  The Long Island tour is intended to not only inform people about the life of those with DMD, but also to promote the awareness of the charity organization started by Javier’s parents, Hope For Javier, which raises money for DMD research.

Sequoya Middle School Displays Works of an Artistic Genius

Sachem School District was happy to host an exhibit of M.C. Escher’s artwork at the Sequoya Middle School.

M.C. Escher has been called the “Master of Artistic Illusion”. On October 14th students and staff at Sequoya Middle School found out first hand why Escher received that prestigious title. Giant reproductions of Escher’s work were beautifully displayed in the exhibit room at Sequoya Middle School. These pieces of art work were provided by the Teacher’s Discovery Traveling Exhibit, which journeys around the country to share the gift of art. From October 14th through the 24th, children and adults of all ages flocked to the Escher exhibit to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to observe such celebrated pieces. One piece in particular, the “Drawing Hands”, contain the techniques of line illusions and the usages of paradoxes that the students at Sequoya Middle School recognize Escher to be known for.

The success of the M.C. Escher Art Exhibit would not have been possible with out the hard work and strategic planning of the school’s art teachers, Denise Phillips and Karen Kwartler. Throughout the school year they have highlighted this event by hanging fact sheets and posters about Escher across the school’s hallways.

Although the art exhibit has passed, it still continues to make a huge impact on the school. Events like “black and white day” (where students only dressed in the according colors) were also coordinated to emphasize the fact Escher only worked in black and white. The math department plans on examining several papers Escher wrote that explain his mathematical approach to his artwork. The department will also be discussing tessellations, and Escher’s use of symmetry he has displayed so flawlessly in his art work.
The M.C. Escher Art Exhibit served as a great learning tool that both the students and staff of Sequoya Middle School truly enjoyed.

Sequoya Middle School Summer Reading Program

Sequoya Middle School Summer Reading Program

The Sequoya Building Leadership Team (BLT) sponsored a summer reading program and contest to encourage Sequoya Middle School students to continue reading for fun and enrichment during the summer months.

Participating students completed a summer reading journey review and summary about each book that they read.  They received a raffle entry for each submitted review and winners received gift certificates from Borders. Therefore, students who read more than one book increased their chances of winning the gift certificate. Entries were verified by parents.

Winners are anxiously looking forward to a shopping spree to further enhance their reading skills and quest for knowledge. The Sequoya Building Leadership Team is proud to acknowledge the commitment of these dedicated students.

Wheelchair Dancer Kitty Lunn to Perform at Adelphi University

Wheelchair Dancer Kitty Lunn to Perform in Adelphi University’s New Performing Arts Center

In observance of Disability Awareness Week, Adelphi University will host a variety of events to celebrate the talents of the millions of Americans with disabilities and raise awareness to disability issues through dance performances and educational workshops.

Professional dancer Kitty Lunn will perform in Adelphi’s dance theatre in the new Performing Arts Center as part of Disability Awareness Week. Ms. Lunn decided that a career-destroying accident would not prevent her from continuing to dance. More than 20 years ago, while preparing for her first Broadway show, she slipped on ice, fell down a flight of stairs, and broke her back. Now a paraplegic (paralyzed from the hips down), she uses a custom built ultra-light wheelchair to perform and glide around a stage. Her legs are motionless, but she dances with her upper body, moving with the flowing gestures of classical ballet and modern dance.

She has not let disability slow her down. She founded Infinity Dance Theater, a non-traditional dance company featuring dancers with and without disabilities, in 1995. Infinity is committed to bringing the joy and drama of motion and movement to a new level of inclusion by expanding the boundaries of dance and changing the world’s perception of what a dancer is. To this end, Ms. Lunn has traveled around the world performing and teaching her methods to other people with disabilities.
The Kitty Lunn ticketed event (free and open to the public) is presented by the College of Arts and Sciences with the Dance Department and in association with the Committee for Individuals with Disabilities.
