Sachem’s Hiawatha Elementary School Holds Presidential Election
(Sachem, N.Y.) Hiawatha Elementary School recently held a mock presidential election so students can better understand America’s voting process.
Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 participated in various activities to help them make an educated decision as to which candidate most represented their beliefs.
Activities included the analysis of campaign advertisements and news articles and the completion of Venn diagrams comparing candidate’s policies.
Students completed registration cards to help them understand the criteria citizens must meet to participate in elections.
Hiawatha’s Official Presidential Election Correspondent, fifth-grader Andrew Schneider, reported on upcoming activities, summarized current events and provided information on the candidates. Andrew also checked all voters’ registration cards and announced results to the building.
Bar graphs were displayed for students to see the voting results for each class, grade level and for the entire building.
Barack Obama won the election by a small margin: 138 votes to 136.
