Fair Media Council’s Executive Director is Principal for the Day at P.S. 24 in Queens
(Long Island, N.Y.) Fair Media Council Executive Director Jaci Clement participated in PENCIL’s Principal for a Day program at P.S. 24 in Flushing, Queens, and will be working with the teachers and staff at this innovative school to develop a media literacy program for the children.
“It was an excellent, rewarding experience to meet the students, parents and staff at this truly special school,” said FMC Executive Director Jaci Clement. “To see the children so engaged in learning was really impressive.”
P.S. 24 has a diverse, multicultural community of about 745 children in grades K-5.Clement will be working with the school over the course of the year to teach the students media literacy skills, which include creating a healthy news habit, deconstructing news stories, identifying the differences between news and opinion and more. “Because of the multicultural dynamic of the school, news stories will also be used to improve English skills and build an understanding of their community and how it works,” said Clement. “Creating good citizens goes hand-in-hand with media literacy.”
Clement had breakfast with fourth and fifth grade students, attended classes throughout the day, read and discussed a news story with a fifth grade class and met with parents, teachers and staff.
